re: Would the US military still dominate if every country spent the same amount on defense?

aTm, a quasi military school ironically, has proven with its football program that spending doesn’t necessarily equate to success.
They don’t have 2 oceans protecting them. Plus they don’t have girl cheerleaders…

Every country spends as much as we do, or we spend as little as they do.
It’s not apples to apples when talking about military spending.
Nearly every adversary’s R&D is handled within their own DOD. So they control the price point.

Depends on if it's a home game or a road game.

The United States has more going for it than just its military spending. There is no other country on the planet with the built in geographical advantages that we have:

One of my thoughts. I read an article once that posited that much of our power comes from our geography (to include internal mountain ranges as barriers).
You can apply that to literally every country in history
Our geography is very much a part of what makes us a superpower.

We don’t have soft power like we used to… or the allies

No we don’t have the ground forces needed and using nukes is out of the question.

When push comes to shove our best defense is the Atlantic and the Pacific. That doesn't change no matter the amount of funding. Geography is hard to beat.
This, combined with countries to the north and south that, while sometimes defiant and disparaging, know deep down that maintaining the status quo is in their best interest.

I spent 20 years in the military.
If we decided to take on the rest of the world, with no moral restrictions, the United States would be the only country left standing on the planet.
And the "conflict" would be over in 72 hours.

Outside of Desert Storm we haven't dominated too much since the Chinese crossed the Yalu River on October 19, 1950.
If you stripped it down to "military vs. military" there isn't a country on earth who is remotely close to the US Military. We stole the president of Venezuela in two hours and had zero KIA.

Name 1 conflict (I’ll give you Nam) that didn’t have highly restrictive rules of engagement that put our military at a disadvantage since Korea.
If the US Military would ever be allowed to bring the entirety of its forces to fight without politically motivated restraint, there would be no one nation that could withstand it.
That being said, spending is one thing. Being able to sustain is another. When need be, the US Military is backed by the largest economic machine the world has ever seen with the natural resources to adapt to any conflict.
There’s a reason other countries don’t spend like we do on defense: they don’t have to because the US Military is the defacto police force of the whole world at this point.
