Would properly timing traffic lights give us more enviro benefit than all the solar farms?

Lines of cars sitting there idling at a red left turn arrow this morning while no one was coming from the other direction.

Meanwhile in the south we are deforesting land to install solar panels that have how much environmental impact to manufacture and transport?

What if instead we used some type of computer machine to realtime adjust our traffic lights?

Solar farms are actually a giant magnifying glass to burn aliens

You can google it

Did it earlier
Waited through 3 light cycles & didn’t get a turn arrow, almost 6 minutes

The mid-timing of traffic lights is one of the things that really grinds my gears IRL

The efficiency of our road systems needs to be addressed but it is really a drop in the bucket when you consider that in the LONG term renewable energy sources can and will likely provide the vast majority of our energy.

The biggest impact on road-based transportation efficiency will be self-driving vehicles. With no other changes, if every car was self-driving tomorrow traffic jams, would decrease markedly. When they are all connected together via cloud traditional traffic jams will be rare.

If solar is ostensibly being implemented to combat ‘global warming’ then I don’t see how it would totally be a benefit to us since it is trapping heat from light that would normally be reflected back into space in places like the desert.

On a dark house roof? Maybe.

Obviously that is only one small piece of the big picture. In order to argue for or against that position, you have to look at, understand and articulate a very complex situation. It is like the electric car equation it is not simple by any stretch but generally people have a pre-conceived idea how they "want" the answer to be and avoid the complexities of the issue as a whole.

My truck doesn’t work like that. It’s either all gas or all brake. Green light = floor it. Yellow light = floor it. Red light = proceed with caution. If you see cross street traffic on red = slam on the brakes

I agree with this, and I wonder if anyone has actually done it.

And we haven’t even discussed battery manufacturing and transport.

If you reduce congestion, people will just drive more and ultimately increase congestion. You cant really get rid of it.

Your specific example is a little different because its a specific situation.

But ultimately people just need to quit driving so god damn much

Real time adaptive signal timing exists but it relies heavily on real time detection. Connected vehicles will help to solve this problem. But it still creates a shitty culture of prioritizing vehicles over humans in cities.

Just remember, Every time you move further out to the suburbs, you kill the planet.

This is a real task taylor-made for A.I.

Give A.I. access in the city to the timings of every traffic signal, traffic cam, wreck info, and construction zone, and instruct the A.I. computer to move traffic through in the most efficient, safe manner.

Problem would be solved immediately.
