I agree with this, and I wonder if anyone has actually done it.

Even if they had only the people that want to believe the conclusion will. In any event, the variables are near limitless and makes it hard to make anything but a very basic conclusion.

In the long run I think self-driving cars will be the de facto standard and the vast majority of our energy usage will come from renewable sources and electricity will be the primary energy for transportation and most everything else. The only question is the timing because everyday O&G is depleted and from my POV I would rather move transportation and electrical production away from O&G since there are so many uses for oil that have less satisfactory substitutes.

This is a real task taylor-made for A.I.

Over time it can also predict demand extremely well. It will be able to plan for schools letting out, plant/hospital shift changes and when people in different areas leave for work. The vehicles will also know how to zipper merge correctly.

What if instead we used some type of computer machine to realtime adjust our traffic lights?
This sentence sounds like you were born in 1885.

I took the LOOP twice today, no waiting for computer machines there.

Am I wrong in thinking that back in the late 70’s, some lights would change to green if no traffic from the other directions were detected?

Anything humans do short of living straight off the land with nature will have negative environmental impacts of some sort.

It’s a trade off we must accept in order to have a developed civilization

Who is building solar farms in the middle of forests? Every one that I've seen has been out in the plains or on the sides of mountains. Every few buildings and houses have some on their roofs. Couple of pump sites Ive seen with them to run lights. Havent seen one in a forest though.

Genuinely interested not just being an asshat. Youd think a nearby treeline would be a pretty big detriment to solar power projects

Replacing most of the traffic lights with roundabouts would help even more.

Several lights in Baton Rouge ARE computerized. They are badass. Doesn't matter if it's 1 or 20 cars in line, last one through the light turns instantly yellow.

I think they cost a couple hundred grand a piece though/

Improved infrastructure as well as self driving cars that can get the most out of our existing highway lane capacity (by having cars safety driving closer together and communicating with each other) will have massive benefits to our air quality and lifestyle.

Yes. I think smart traffic lights are a much better short term investment for both efficiency and environmental reasons.

If you reduce congestion, people will just drive more and ultimately increase congestion. You cant really get rid of it.

You aren’t wrong - but in a lot of these cases, that ship has already sailed.

Also - increasing capacity of a piece of our transportation infrastructure improves the value of our business districts by making them accessible to more commuters and industrial users alike - which improves economic competitiveness. Projects like widening I-10 in Baton Rouge should be supported for that reason as well as increased safety when there are accidents.

I do think express carpool lanes should be included in the design of all urban/suburban freeway enhancements though. That’s a better investment than adding new exit every few miles.

I am very familiar with this argument and used to 100% agree with it.

Putting my pragmatic hat on - it’s next to impossible to not prioritize vehicles over humans in areas that were developed after the mid 20th century. It’s easier to take the existing pedestrian centric areas and build on them with better public spaces and mass transit. That’s what most successful American cities are doing now.

You can likely program in the expectation of general assholery.
