I really don’t know why this is a big deal. He competed last olympics for Sweden and won Gold then too, did he not?

This isn’t really new.

None of that in Sweden I’m sure.

What? A place he's hardly ever been to prior to representing last Olympics. He's not a product of Sweden, his mom is.

Sha’Carri richardson signed a Nike deal worth $20 mil and she didn’t even get gold. I’m really curious how much Mondo would be making. I’ve said it in other threads, Sweden has a whopping 11 mil people and yes the euro track circuit pays but it doesn’t pay American major league player type of money like a soccer player makes. I honestly feel like he’d have a good chance of being one of the top 5 most popular american athletes at these games outside of the pro sport guys like Lebron if he had stayed.

He gambled to go for Sweden early but once he became the record holder I gotta believe the payoff was likely better staying US. It is what it is.

He probably likes dusted crawfish anyway. Sweden can have him.

Here are the real reasons why Mondo Duplantis competes for Sweden.

1. He's a citizen of Sweden and the United States. His mother is from Sweden. His Swedish grandparents don't even speak English. Despite lies and misinformation on social media that suggest Sweden paid Duplantis and fast-tracked his citizenship, the fact is, Duplantis has been a citizen of Sweden since his birth.

2. By competing for Sweden, Duplantis was able to start competing in pole vaulting at a younger age. Sweden does not have the same age restrictions on competing at the highest levels of the sport. The United States does.

3. As it pertains to the Olympics, Sweden selects their Olympians on the totality of their performance over several years, rather than an all-or-nothing Olympic trial.

4. It's more lucrative financially. Pole vaulting is popular in Sweden. It is not a mainstream sport in the United States. Mondo Duplantis is a national superstar in Sweden, viewed with the same regard by Swedes as the country's best soccer players. He was the 2020 World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year and is estimated to be worth millions.

5. Sweden offered to let Mondo's father Greg Duplantis, a former world-class pole vaulter himself, coach him on the Swedish team. The same offer was not made by the U.S. team. Mondo is still coached today by his father Greg, and mother Helena.

Are you trying to compare a champion (silver this year) in one of the most popular Olympic events (100 m dash) to a pole vaulter?

Richardson also competes in multiple different events. Mondo is strictly a pole vaulter.

Pole Vault is not much different in terms of marketability as Shot Put where Americans Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs have finished #1 and #2 for 3 Olympics in a row.

Crouser and Kovacs aren't getting $20 million dollar Nike contract, either.

Mondo is likely making the maximum amount of money possible being in Sweden.

I'm just here to say his brother Antoine was a heck of a ball player for the Fighting Tigers of the University of LSU...

This isn’t a stretch. He’s a Swede as much as he is a Cajun. He represents LSU and Sweden and look at his girl friend. Stop it. He’s a National Hero and a world wide super star. He has every right to his pursuit of happiness. Nothing more American than that.

Difference here is Mondo’s dad is actually qualified. He’s been coaching other pole vault athletes for a long time.

And from what I understand, USA Track and Field wouldn’t allow Mondo’s parents to be his coaches. Sweden gave the Duplantis family the opportunity to do it as a group. Good for them. Couldn’t be more impressed with how they did it.
