I pay my mother in law $260 every two weeks to just pick up my kids (10 and 7) and make sure they get their stuff done. On days they are off or holidays, she stays with them all day. This would work out well if my mother in law was somewhat healthy and reliable.

Guess what? She ain’t. She’s early 60’s going on mid 80’s. She can barely move, and has a “mystery” illness that she is routinely sick (while eating like a 5 year old). My kids have zero structure while she is watching them. I routinely have to leave work early to get the kids, who are let out of school about an hour apart so anything past 2:30 PM work wise is completely shot.

My plan is, oldest turns 11 in January. From what I hear that’s old enough to stay alone within reason. I’m planning on getting a few Ring cameras just to check in. The younger one, I’ll pick up from school, and take them to my office with me until it’s time to get off work. On off days or holidays, just take vacation if it’s possible, or take the younger to work with me. Just so I can get away from scrambling to figure shite out.

Can’t let the wife retire from work just yet. She has her moms DNA in her which means “I’d cook and clean the house more” would turn into didn’t get out of my gown today and watched “This Is Us” until my eyes bled.

Wake up about 645, think about killing myself, realize that would be too good a thing for the wife. Go make coffee.

Make sure the squirts are up and getting ready by 7. From 715-730, I will flip on a kids show.

730, load them in the car and drive them to school, which is in my neighborhood. I return home by 745 and prepare for my work day.

Noon, nanny arrives: cleans up, folds laundry, organizes.

3pm, nanny goes and gets kids, takes them to after school activities, etc.

6pm, wife and I are done working, nanny leaves—I make dinner, play with kids for a bit, they’re in bed by 830.

Rinse, repeat

2 Qs
1. y’all both work from home?
2. How much that run ya?

We’ve had her a long time. And she was young when we hired. $500/week.

My wife works from home half time. I’m always home.

Set up an FSA for the after care. It doesn't solve your problem, but it'll take some of the sting out. And tell them to do their homework while they wait. Honestly, it's just a part of middle-class life.

Problem for the population in general. But my mom would be the answer here. She’s retired, and got more energy than me & my wife combined. Problem is she lives almost an hour away, still always has shite to do somehow and they travel too much to be a reliable option

If you think it's hard married, try doing it divorced. Busses will only run to one house, and of course it isn't mine.

Most go through it nowadays
I look back on those years and wonder how we did do it all but was fortunate to have parents and in laws able to help at times
Not sure how some do it with relatives out of town
I got in trouble from the boss a couple times but you know what life goes on, if it came to having to find another job I would have but it never escalated to that
Hopefully I will be able to help my kids through it one day as well

We always had a few other neighborhood families in similar situations and traded off with them... one parent didn't go to work until 9 would take all the kids to school and another who go off work mid-afternoon would pick them all up.

That sucks. Yeah, I by no means think we have it bad. We got it figured out pretty good. I’m just fine tuning and realize if I could solve this problem, I’d have an extra $5-6k/year for something way more than fun

For my mother in law, it's textbook Munchausen syndrome. She's seen so many doctors and not one of them can figure anything out. That's because it's not real, and she is staying sick for attention. Wife and her sister dote on her a great deal. That's incentive enough for her to keep the charade up for as long as possible. I just want it out of my routine, and so I can stop flushing $260 every two weeks on something that doesn't work properly.

It's tough. It wouldn't be possible if I didn't work from home currently. Starting in January, it's about to get nuts when I have to return to office and resume travel. Very likely going to just have wife become SAHM again, or change jobs to something more flexible like half-day pre-k, etc. (which she would love... teaching sucks right now).

3 kids at 3 schools.
Wake up 5:30 am
Bus 1 leaves at 6:30
I take 1 kid to school (no bus) at 6:45
Wife leaves for work at 6:45
Bus 3 leaves at 8:30
I work until 3pm, and go to pick up kid 2, and pick up kid 1 from her school, because it makes sense and the bus ride length in the afternoon is absurd.
I get home at 4pm and work until 6pm
Wife gets home anytime from 5-6pm typically.

Kids have gymnastics, sports, scouts, other stuff several nights per week.

It's a freaking ballet. What suffers currently is the house and chores. I cannot yell at my kids to complete their chores while I try to catch up on work. Our weekends usually end up being a shiat show with activities and chores that need to be done.

*********
It used to be easy, when the kids were little and my wife was SAHM.
It was easy when the kids were all at the same school my wife teaches at.
It got really complicated this year. I am at my desk til midnight most nights it seems. I need to win the lottery.

I think this whole thread is a waste because where daycare really gets us by the balls is the holidays. If they can’t go to my parent’s, where the hell they gonna spend 2 weeks for Christmas vaca & a week for Thanksgiving?(well, hopefully in a deer stand most of thanksgiving)

Make enough money to be able to let your wife stay at home

Or

Stop being such a materialist and cut your budget

Or

Make investments that work for you and give you mailbox money

It is very possible. You just have to accept that you aren't both driving Tahoes. You will have to live on less money.

Well, neither one of us drive Tahoes, and I did make my wife settle for a Traverse because it was 20K cheaper and still had all the bells and whistles...

Did you see what the cost of the housing market is today?

Everything is expensive my man...

This shows me you don't care enough about it to make it so your wife doesn't need a job. Which is fine. That is your choice.

Your kids are old enough to be in school so I assume you already live somewhere. I am not sure why housing market prices today would affect a house you already have.

we have 3 in school, luckily i have a ver flexible job and my wife owns her business and can make it work if need be. Plus my Mother in law works at the school and lives with us.

mine are 3 boys, all same school 5th through K.

I Wake up 5:30 am- get dressed, make lunches, breakfast and lay out uniforms

615- kids wake up, get dressed, eat, exercise with me quickly(pushups and squats as a family)

Wife and I leave at 645

kids ride with MIL and leave at 710

after school, 1 of 2 options- after care and i pick them up, mother in law takes them. most days we have something after school so we divide and conquer.

usually i leave work at 345 or 4. wife usually home by 530.

my oldest plays baseball(off from travel right now but still has pitching, hitting and outfield lessons weekly) and is currently wrapping up football season( I coach, have 2 practices a week plus games on sat) and just started basketball practice twice weekly, games will start soon on saturdays

middle kid is still doing baseball right now and will until decemeber before a month break. has 3 practices a week plus 3 lessons a week plus 2 football practices and games on saturday.

youngest just finished soccer and is about to start basketball before going back to baseball during spring.

in other words, you have no life, let your kids live their best life adn suck it up butter cup. and yes paying for private then after care sucks donkey dick but its worth it imo

I live this shite daily.

I'm in IT, wife is in healthcare. She gets them to school on the way to the office. I pick them up, but I've got meetings all damn day. I have to time my day to go pick them up, most of the time in a meeting on my phone. Then the 2 oldest are in sports.

Pick them up run home, get their shite together, snack time, wait for wife to get home, leave for practice.

It's fricking nuts, wife has no flexibility in her schedule.
