This thread is giving me PTSD. Glad my kids are in college or beyond.
Not sure how we pulled it off, but we did.
Good luck to you. It all works out.

This is one of the reasons why I stopped working when my oldest started school. We don't have family around us willing to help and while I made a good salary, I was generally the one making sacrifices in my career because my husband made far much more and had way more potential earning power than I did. I don't regret it as this is where I need to be at this point in my life.
Find a SAHP at the school willing to pick up your kids and keep them until you get them. I used to do it for a couple of hours for a friend of mine and didn't care for that but 20 minutes is nothing. By the time I get my kid home, bookbags cleared out, coats/shoes put away, snack set out, 20 minutes are up. Are you guys part of any parents FB groups in your area? I see parents in your situation asking for someone to pick up their kids all the time and there are always people willing to help them out. Gas money doesn't hurt but that will be far less than $500 a month. :)

9 year old should be about ready to be home alone.

I was told "legally" it's 11 to be home alone.

I did what you're doing. Sucks, but it is what it is.
And I even paid more in afterschool care... for 1 child.

In Louisiana there is no minimum age, but if something happens to a child that is 10 or under while a parent is not home, then criminal charges against the parent can be filed.

I am sure it has been said but there are a lot of LSU college students that are always looking to help with kids after school. Would be much cheaper that way.

Working parents with young school kids…how do you pull it off?
Sounds like they never put one on.

I don't know what we'd do without my mom. She takes my kids to school and picks them up on the days my wife works

She has her moms DNA in her which means “I’d cook and clean the house more” would turn into didn’t get out of my gown today and watched “This Is Us” until my eyes bled.
