Sorry, I should have asked you directly. Any idea why they do this?

I think it's either observed/learned behavior or in some cases they were taught at one time to use the inflection to avoid sounding like they're seeking conflict (harsh or blunt endings to sentences/statements). Some people perceive it as "more feminine".

The barista in the clip you posted kind of has that going on, already. One of the elements is that every sentence sounds like a question.

Oh god, I don't think I'm around people who do that. I would notice.

uptalk and vocal fry

Related to uptalk, the “lists.” I’m not even sure how to describe this further. These absurd itemizations, each accentuated by an uptalk.

Eta pasted from post above:

Yes. The list is a series of “questions.”

I fortunately have 99% insulated myself from this. My wife doesn’t speak this way. I have boys who definitely do not.

The younger women (mid 20s) in our church community group don’t either.

I need to find a way to do this. Moving to HSV from Colorado has definitely helped. Unfortunately, my wife works with these women from Colorado (who half are from So. California).

I think uptalk is also known as vocal fry

Uptalk is generally High Rising Terminal. Vocal fry is that popping/creaking sound that's low register (shout out to SLPs for explaining the difference ). Kim Kardashian is the queen of vocal fry.

High-pitched "customer service" voices that disappear when talking to friends

I sometimes speak in a higher pitch bc it makes my voice clearer on a phone or video. I think it also puts the other person more at ease so I use a higher pitch when I’m trying to be friendly

I heard a girl do uptalk during a speech but afterwards in normal conversation she didn’t. It was weird.

Well my normal voice is very deep and threatening to weaker people, on account of my insanely high level of testosterone

I hate it!! I make fun of my daughter for doing it on occasion. She doesn’t even realize she’s doing it. She picks it up from her roommates and friends.
I tell her please talk normal. She gets mad but she stops

Those are bad. "That tracks" or "are you tracking?" .... was pretty bad too but I've somehow gotten used to it though I will never say it myself.

I notice a distinct rise in contrived

It's social media and reality TV, which makes people imitate it. Like the ridiculous f'ing trend of every woman driving needing to hold their phone up to their face on speaker in a 2025 Navigator.

As someone else pointed out, we had Valley Girl shite a long time ago, but most of us only were subjected to it if we watched Clueless.

Tiktok. They’re addicted to social media and learn all kinds of bad habits from watching tiktoks all day instead of talking to actual humans in real life.
