A woman was struck by a Corvette when the car’s automatic starter malfunctioned and shot out the front of a parking garage not far from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade route, officials and witnesses said. “It happened in the blink of an eye, it happened so fast,” said witness Todd Bassen. “All I know it is the car seemed to be accelerating because it was rolling faster and faster.”
The accident happened as the yellow sports car was being brought out of a garage on East 56th Street near Madison Avenue around 1:15 p.m. The vehicle had just been driven up to the lip of the garage’s driveway before the owner hit the automatic start button on his key ring to start the engine.
But instead of just turning over the engine, the car lunged forward, shot across traffic and hit a woman on the other side of the street.

I don't think that's what happened.

That's why they make systems that won't start in gear now. I had a buddy in HS that ran his truck into his parents house one morning after hitting the remote start

So it was parked in Drive?

How the hell did they turn it off in gear? Who buys an automatic corvette?

Most Corvette owners.

I don't think that's mechanically possible. Something else happened here.

Drunk driver hits woman, blames automatic starter.

March 17th, the day Skynet became self aware.

You turn it off in gear by turning off the ignition, pressing the clutch, and putting the vehicle in gear; or holding down the clutch while in gear (which in effect puts it in neutral) and turning off the ignition.
It was most definitely a standard transmission. When you turn off a standard you have two choices - put it in first gear or put it in neutral and put the parking brake on. I'm assuming he went with the former, and when he hit the auto-start button the car was in gear and took off.
It could be a fault in the vehicle's automatic start system that allows the car to start without depressing the clutch, or its just operator error/ineptitude.

The only vehicle I've ever known to lunge forward (when you turned the key) while in manual gear without clutching, was a Dodge.
I thought Ford and Chevy had kill-switches that if the clutch wasn't down, it wouldn't start -- at all.
But of course I haven't had a new vehicle with a manual transmission in years.

AI from GM.
So far, since 1953, the scoreboard reads:
Women- 11,342 Totalled Corvettes
Corvettes- 1 Totalled Woman
The times, they are a'changin'.

I've never known a manual transmission to start without the clutch being pressed either, but I also don't know how automatic start works on a standard. Also, was this an aftermarket system or GM?

Dodges were notorious for starting and lunging forward while in gear without pushing the clutch, if you turned the starter.
Have a 94 Dodge Dakota with 355,000 miles. It's a farm truck. Blew out a clutch slave cylinder at a red light once and pulled over to look. Decided to use the longstanding quirk to my advantage to get going in first gear, rest of gears able to upshift using good ole RPM and no clutch.

The driver, who refused to give his name, later blamed the parking garage attendants for the mishap. “Maybe [the parking attendants] didn’t put the emergency brakes on,” he speculated. “[The attendants] had it on auto control.” An attendant who identified himself as Roberto said he retrieved the car at the man’s request and engaged the parking brake while waiting for the owner to come. Roberto said he handed off the keys to the man who then went to pay the cashier. That’s when the car began moving. “The driver went to pay. He squeezed the button – click, click – and the car started rolling,” Roberto said. “The driver said, ‘oh sh–t’ and ran after the car.” “After the car hit the woman, the driver opened the door and jumped in and stopped the car.”
hmm

Sounds like one of those new fangled transmissions that let you choose between automatic or manual, with the pedal shifters on the steering wheel.

Auto start wasn't an option on my jeep. If I purchased an auto tran I could have added the remote start. May have been an aftermarket system in which case it is 100% the drivers responsibility if he bypassed the clutch.
