You in Aruba? That was my beer of choice on our trip there this past February. I hated having to get up at 7 AM to go down to get the hotel staff to tag the chairs.

Depending what part you are staying in, there is certainly trash around. The beach area in front of the rental buildings is ridiculously overcrowded and trashy. The beach area in front of St. Thomas isn't bad at all since it is owners.

cant speak for other places, but in Alabama, its Ike's rentals(LSU fan btw) and his employees usually work 12 hour days. you may see them sitting on their arse mid day, but they work their asses off for the summer

Yes. This is the answer. The actual tide line doesn't matter legally. Almost everything else in this thread seems to be nonsense..

I believe the state set/charted the mean high tides prior to the beach restoration. As I understand it (without re-reading the case), these lines are now set as the public/private divider. Because the line isn't real and everyone is not a surveyor, the police departments implemented a 20- foot rule for the public's use of the water.
See this recent article in Destin's newspaper that states:

According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the city of Destin, the 20-foot rule essentially states that the area 20 feet from the water’s edge is public property. The 20-foot rule, or customary use as it's known around the state, has been in place for a "couple decades," according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
“They can sit, stand, recreate in that area,” said Doug Rainer, the Public Information Manager for the city of Destin. This includes setting up their own beach chairs. However, vendors are forbidden from using this space.
In the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Beach Trespass Directive, it states, “Vendors should be required to keep chairs and umbrellas or cabanas out of such area.”
So OP, it's likely that the vendor was the person in the wrong in the confrontations that you witnessed.

the 2 we had earlier this summer were LSU students. I think the owner has a place for them to stay also.

Good to know. This debate reminds me of the pseudo-reserved tailgating spots. It's not really reserved, but if you're the a-hole that takes somebody else's spot is it really going to be an enjoyable time for either party?

30a used to be the sleepy, quiet escape from Destin. Seaside was a the epitome of all of that. Now its basically no different than Sandestin. Now you have to wear wristbands if you're a homeowner in order to get spot on the beach. I know a few homeowners who were used to leaving bikes and such out have stuff stolen this past weekend.

My family also has one in St Bart that is used for customers. I prefer the floor plans of the St Bart units a lot more, but the view isn't nearly the same at St Thomas.

lived in coastal carolina for 5 years now. less than 1/4 mile form beach. I've been twice. Not worth dealing with tourists. Def moving inland when I buy a house rather than pay 85K per acre to be next to a beach i don't frequent.
