I was initially thinking a boning knife, something to trim meats with.

Barbecue Knives and Leather Roll

Posted by TXTIGERTAIL on 12/11/25 at 4:20 pm
I'm looking for advice on a Christmas gift. The recipient does barbecue competitions (Texas style) but doesn't have a nice set of their own knives. I thought I could buy one really decent knife and maybe a personalized leather knife roll to get them started.

I would appreciate thoughts and suggestions? I would like to keep it under $300

TIA
I had to dispute a charge through Capital One once. I had all receipt backup for the dispute. Capital One first tried to get me to “work it out” with the vendor, and I did. The vendor wouldn’t budge. I then pressed it with Capital One and their final response was something along the lines of “we aren’t willing to pursue the vendor for over billing, but because you are such a long-standing valuable customer we will refund you the money”

I was not pleased with how Capital One handled it, but they did make it right with me. I think it took two management levels above the Customer Service hotline operator.
I saw a blue light flash around 9pm last night near 1488 and Magnolia HS I’m hoping that means they are close to powering the lines here. Just finding new issues as they energize.
My mom got power back last night. She lives off Dobbin Huffsmith. I’m off 1488 by Magnolia HS, still no power here.

Financial Advisor Company Move

Posted by TXTIGERTAIL on 9/2/23 at 11:52 am
My FA (their whole team) left for a new company. I’m not going to stay with my current company with a new FA.

I’m happy to move the funds to the new company to stay with my FA, but am looking at options to save myself the FA fee. This was something I was already thinking about.

I have three account types: IRA, Roth IRA, and CMA.

I’m looking into the ability to roll my IRA into my 401k at work. I’m not sure what the options are for the Roth or CMA or the implications for tax and penalties.

Has anyone had an FA leave; what did you do?
Between inflation and SLI stock performance, I can now contribute 107 boxes of Franzia to the wine mixer.
Negative market forces have led me to revise my “Franzia Forecast” downward. I can now provide 134 boxes of Franzia for the wine mixer.
Letting the pups out last night on Gunstock mountain in NH “felt” pretty dang cold.
I ended up choosing a Nikon Z5 for the camera body (this was a gift and the reason for the $1500 budget)

I purchased two lenses to start:
Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 S
Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8

I can’t wait for clear night skies to attempt my first Astro shot.

Second question for the group. I’m looking for a good tripod for shooting while hiking/backpacking; there is an aluminum option by Peak Design that looks good. Any opinions or other suggestions for a good tripod?

GLG-Paid Expertise Request

Has anyone ever received an email requesting they join GLG as a paid expert? I just received a request today and was wondering how legitimate this is.

TIA
Thank you for the detailed response, and to all others who took the time to respond.

I plan to use the camera in colder conditions (below 20 degrees at times) and I’m seeing some reviews say the Nikon Z50 doesn’t perform well at low temps.

I’ll do more research in the other options you posted (excluding the $50k set-up). :)

OT Photographers -Camera Recs

Posted by TXTIGERTAIL on 1/20/23 at 2:12 pm
*Update-I bought a Nikon Z5. Looking for recs for a good hiking/backpacking travel tripod*

I am looking to purchase a camera for astral photography that’s also good for general shots as well. Was thinking Nikon d7500, but am hearing they will be discontinued within 2 years. Should I look at Nikons mirror less cameras? Would you recommend another option. I would like to stay under 1500$

TIA
A sleeping bag fits just fine in the back of an Audi A7, with the 2nd row seats folded down, if you’re 5’6”.

I had a few good nights under the stars out west.
The UMC postponed General Conference. Kicked the can down the road when members were already upset about the Book of Discipline not being enforced. My church voted to leave, over 90% in favor of. And we were one of the largest stateside churches in the UMC.
Changed my Cap One Money market to a Performance Savings thanks to this topic. Thank you!
