In my six years of reviewing washing machines, I’ve never once seriously considered recommending a Speed Queen top-loader. This shouldn’t be controversial: Every publication that tests appliances has years of controlled test results proving the superiority of front-loading washers. So why are most washer reviews’ comments sections filled with Speed Queen fans claiming otherwise?

quote:

“Once I got down to real clothes and a real test, it’s like, this fricking thing isn’t even washing, I don’t even know what to do,” said Pallas in a subsequent interview. “Honestly man, I was totally devastated by it. I didn’t publish that video without a heavy heart, you know what I mean? It was serious, I had to sleep on it. Am I really going to change my entire opinion on Speed Queen that I’ve had all my entire life?”

They're saying front loading washers are better?

I'll take my top loading old school Whirlpool with an agitator all day. It actually cleans.

Yep. Mine is almost 20 years old and cleans fine. It will be replaced with another $300-400 top loader when it dies

The better front loading washers are much more efficient and clean clothes much better with less damage to the fibers assuming they are used correctly. Actual cleaning is not why people buy/recommend Speed Queen. Speed Queen is "popular" because so many people are tired of having the computer controlled front loaders repaired and having to replace them so they seek out a built like a tank analog machine.

"We" simply aren't willing to pay for quality as a whole now and thus we get new fancy consumer goods built to last about a year and the manufacturers are happy to supply them since designed obsolescence helps their bottom line.

Same.

Actually just the other day a good friend of ours had their fancy Samsung washer crap out for the 3rd time in 3 years, requiring a repairman.

He caved to his wife who wanted a fancy, “nice” looking washer. I think they’re close to getting a classic whirlpool off of craigslist like I did.

I don't agree with this at all.

I've never met a front loader that can clean like a machine with an agitator.

Efficiency I won't argue.

I've had good luck with the top loader Sears/Kenmore. It's an appliance sitting in the back room in the corner of our basement. I don't care about the looks very much.

My in-laws have one of the more fancy Samsungs. Supposed to work very well but I think they've had to get a few repairs. They are in Louisiana and don't have a basement, so I guess they wanted something quieter. It looks really cool but I think they were expensive.

Same here, washer was left by last owner, i wanted to replace it with a new one, and i'm glad my wife(cheap arse), talked me out of it. Thing is a beast, and just cleans, cleans, and cleans.

ONly thing we had to replace in the 8 years( at least 15-20 years old) was hoses, former house owner had shitty rubber hoses still hooked up, they wore out and we put the good ones on and no problems.

Same with ours, 20 years and repaired once for less than $150. Still kicking in the washroom. WGAF what it looks like.

Be honest have you ever tested them side by side with the same stains and compared them afterwards?

Every entity that does concludes the quality front loaders are better at cleaning.

Your statement is more than likely based more on feeling than objective data and a bit of confirmation bias.

I won't link since it is behind a pay wall but if you have any question see Consumer Reports. Consumers Union has been testing them for years and always reports the same thing.

I got a Kenmore Elite washer as a gift years ago and it was such a piece of shite I will never own another. It broke once a year reliably.

My wife was saying she was bored when I was at work so I tossed the washer and got a scrub board and tub. I get compliments all the time about how clean I look

Ironically, reportedly his street name is "Speed Queen", so to answer your question: Both.
