Will the floppy disk symbol live on longer than the floppy disk itself?

The 3 1/2” floppy disk is mostly gone now, but its image lives on in various programs. How many people click on that image and will never use a disk?

I will love and cherish what the symbol means as long as I'm breathing.

I think this is pretty obvious considering floppy disks are completely irrelevant and useless now

The 3 1/2” came out in 1983. Lasted what, 25 years?

Young whippersnapper. This isn't a floppy disk.

This is a floppy disk.

It isn't a floppy disk if it is rigid, it must actually be floppy.

And stay off my lawn.

Yeah, i remember the 5 inch variety were floppies and the “new” 3.5 inch disks were “hard disks”. Guess they took the floppy title after the big floppies went extinct.

Incorrect.

Your hint should have been that neither of the objects you posted are in the shape of a disk.

“Floppy disk” refers to the disk of thin magnetic film on the inside. The rigidity of the exterior casing is irrelevant.

As of a couple of years ago a place I used to work still had data archived on 8 inch disks. No way to read it, but they had it.
