re: Will the floppy disk symbol live on longer than the floppy disk itself?

It already has. Crazy I think the biggest floppy disks were 2 mb. I recently saw a 2TB micro SD card. Would take a million floppy disks to equal that storage space. Insane.
I was arguing with this thumbfaced proggie moron the other day about the environmental impact of new media storage.
He was arguing that because of rare earth minerals and some shite, the little usb drives were more harmful to the earth.
I tried to explain to him that it would take MILLIONS of floppy disks, and all the assorted costs with their manufacture and transport and storage and the time value of all that, to equal one little thumb drive. He still wouldn’t concede that the environmental impact of a thumb drive was an improvement over floppy disks.

I also remember when we got a hard drive for our computer. It was a separate large thing. I think it cost $1000, and I want to say it was 2-300 floppy disks , so like 350-500mb (83-85 abouts). I also remember my parents going nuts for a $1200 chip called a Video Toaster, so they could ad screen wipes to home movies. Like 1988-91 in there sometime.
Had a friend whose dad was short term CEO for ATT then went on to Bell labs and Lucent Tech. When dad was at ATT, he had the Pentium in a portable computer(still had to attach to screen but included a keyboard) like 6 months before released to public. It was worth like $20k I want to say it was like 66 mhz

5 1/4" wasn't the biggest though.

You should have told him how much mining is needed to get the metals for one Tesla Battery pack.. Strip mining at that.

I remember wanting the Pentium Powered Aptiva S from IBM. It was like $2500 and had a 300mhz processor. Also a 2 gig hard drive. Just insane or and a CDR drive.

It isn't a floppy disk if it is rigid, it must actually be floppy.
And stay off my lawn.
The 'floppy' term refers to the disk inside the casing.
3.5's contain floppy disks as well.
A dvd for example is NOT a floppy disk.
And a hard drive has .... you guessed it.. a hard disk
But on topic, now that we're going to solid state and flash storage(no rotating disks anymore), the continued use of the disk symbol for storage is peculiar.

Incorrect.
Your hint should have been that neither of the objects you posted are in the shape of a disk.
“Floppy disk” refers to the disk of thin magnetic film on the inside. The rigidity of the exterior casing is irrelevant.
See why I put you on the top 5 list of douchebag posters?
You're a know-it-all a-hole attorney. Not some tech guru. Yet here you are being an a-hole about storage media.
I told him the same thing with a much less condescending tone.
Thanks for reassuring me of your nomination.

I remember having this discussion about 2003 when SD cards were just coming out and were like $60 for 256mb, about how small it was to disk drives. At the time I had a '00 Pentium 3 Dell with a 3.5 floppy drive still.
My grandpa said, "that's nothing two of these boxes equals one floppy disK" and had punch cards. lol.
That generation saw so much change.
4Chan in it's infancy.
(nb4 I know thats an old language)

You're wrong though. The disk inside the casing is floppy, they just came up with a more protective design.
That's a 5 1/4 or a 7 and a 1/2 disk. The 3.5s while "hard" were still floppy disks.

I intentionally was a pedantic a-hole to someone for being an incorrect pedantic a-hole. The difference between you and me is that I know I was being an a-hole, while you are somehow unaware that this:

Makes you a condescending prick. Then again, I imagine that this isn't the only area in which you completely lack self awareness.

When I started college, Computer Science classes were still using punch cards. By the Sophomore year there were computer labs with PCs that had twin 5 1/4" drives. The drive on the left was for MS-DOS and programs, and the drive on the right was for your data disk. There was no autosave. When the power went out there was a chorus of screams from all the term papers vanishing LOL. The monitors were monochrome green, and after hours of staring at the screen, when you looked up, everything that was white looked pink for a while.

In my mind's eye I can still see people scrambling around trying to gather all the punch cards swirling around the quad on a windy day after they dropped their giant stack of them.
I had the same experience as you with the progression of technology in the computer lab.

The month before Katrina hit I was doing a job in a High School in the 7th ward area of New Orleans. In 2005, in their lab, they had nothing but green screen computers, I remember being in fourth grade in 1989 when our school went to color monitors.

Nevermind I stalked you and found your Facebook. You're a wee boy. A smart-arse but wee nonetheless. And I would have never guessed you were not a money grubbing a-hole attorney but you're actually one of the noble ones. And you drive(well used to at least) a Honda Accord and are Libertarian like me.
I will remove you from my top 5 douchiest poster list.

Pretty sure you could have gleaned all of that from my posts on here, but creepy, nonetheless
