Will Smith getting paid for another action role. The movie is called Emancipation and is directed by the guy who made Training Day and the Equalizer. The plot is:
quote:

After being whipped nearly to death, a slave named Peter escapes from a Louisiana plantation, outwitting cold-blooded hunters led by Fassel, as he makes his way North, where he joins the Union Army.

It's based on the true story of a slave named Gordon who in 1863 escaped the Lyons plantation that was located along the west bank of the Atchafalaya River in St. Landry Parish. He rubbed his body with onions to evade tracking dogs and ran 40 miles until he met Union soldiers

A picture of Gordon with scars on his back from whippings went viral when it was published in Harper's Weekly in 1863 but the story accompanying it about his life was fabricated by the author.

Well, he’s used to other men laying pipe to his wife, so he’s got that part down at least.

So Will Smith gets to portray a black man that had violence used against him only a short time after he used violence against a black man?

Disturbing. Pretty normal at the time though, unfortunately.

That’s why they make these movies.

The story is true but, just like today, media 160 years ago couldn't help but fictionalize it and make it about themselves instead of the truth.

I guess I'm confused then, so the story is true?

Funny how this is still the case, unfortunately.

Why would that surprise you? I’ve seen a few pictures over the years of slaves with whipping scars on their backs. Was I supposed to know which one was the “iconic” one?
