He happens to be 3, and holding a smaller object tends to be easier for him, so we cut the sandwiches for him.

Rectangles is the correct way. Less length of cut means less squishidge of the sandwich and a cleaner process all together. The rectangles might not be as pretty but are much more practical

I cut toasted sandwiches diagonal. I cut cold sandwiches like your wife.
