I think this is an article that about 90% of this site should read with great interest. Y'all will probably complain it's too long, though.
The TL;DR version: Quit yer bitchin'. It's not healthy.

The TL;DR version: Quit yer bitchin'. It's not healthy.
quote:
Something bad happens, to you or around you. You vent. Something else bad happens to or around you. You complain. Something else bad happens; you vent to one person, and later, when you find a new audience, you complain.
Pretty soon you're really good at complaining because while practice may not make perfect, it does make myelin, a microscopic neural substance that adds considerable speed and accuracy to thoughts and movement. Myelin is kind of like a muscle, except instead of strengthening your body, it strengthens neural pathways related to a particular skill.
Problem is, your neural pathways aren't equipped to make value judgments. Do something positive over and over again, and you'll gain a useful skill and habit. Do something negative over and over again, and you'll build a destructive skill and habit.
Either way, you've altered your brain.
Neural networks are built on synapses, small gaps at the end of neurons that allow electrical or chemical signals to pass from one neuron to the next. That's how nerve cells connect. Every time a charge is triggered, the synapses move microscopically closer together to decrease the distance and therefore the lag time. In really simple terms, think muscle memory.
That adaptation helps build patterns of thought and behavior. The result is a virtuous cycle if you're trying to learn a helpful new skill, and a vicious cycle if you regularly do something less positive.
quote:
Like complaining. Think of it as a bizarre version of the law of attraction: Complaining will cause you to "attract" more experiences you can complain about (except in this case the phenomenon is based on science, not philosophy).
Complain, and over time it's easier to be negative than positive. Complain often enough, and for some complaining becomes a default behavior. Oh, they'll say they're perfectionists. Or they'll say they have extremely high standards.
But really, they've just learned to complain -- and trained their neural pathways to be really good at complaining.
quote:
I know what you're thinking: when you're mad, upset, frustrated, etc., releasing those negative feelings helps you feel better.
Nope. Science says venting, whining, or complaining about a problem makes a bad situation worse. According to a study published in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, the more participants vented, the worse they felt their day had gone -- and the longer those negative feelings last.

Life is...Too $hort to complain.
Maintain an attitude of gratitude and count your blessings every day.

I've never understood why people chose to stay in the outrage cycle and constantly look for depressing shite or double down on their victim complex. What a sad way to live.

I just don’t complain about stuff. Why????? Is the thing you are complaining about gonna remedy itself just because you gripe??? I used to stress everyday about everything. But I just refuse to stress and complain. I live a much better life because of that.

Book of Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7:
"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he".
This proverb is 3,000 years old.
Water is wet.

My ex needs to read this.
She never ever ever stopped complaining. It was so mentally exhausting.

It seems everyone has to be an expert now days. Sometimes it's so refreshing just to hear someone say "I don't know", instead of acting like they're an expert.

The more negative thoughts you have the more negativity you bring into your life.

If more people would add a dash of stoicism into their lives, particularly in no longer blaming others for how they react to situations, the world would be a much better place.

Pretty logical advice.
Starting 3 weeks ago, I made an effort to cut out negativity in my thoughts and behavior and to respond to situations from a perspective of optimism. I can easily feel the effects it has on me in my day to day life, especially close relationships.

I have a bone to pick with this article.

Every time I get in a negative frame of mind and start feeling sorry for myself I think of all the poor bastards around the world at exactly this moment who are having an IV started to have surgery, are receiving the news that someone they know and love has just passed away, hearing the C word from their own doctor...and all of a sudden the SOB in front of me at the red light on his cell phone who sat through the turning arrow seems miniscule. Happiness is about being satisfied with what you have, working toward correcting the things you can and paying no attention at all to things outside your sphere of influence. I also expect nothing other than dishonesty, pushing an agenda and scoundrelism of any other person and I am very seldom disappointed as a result. In fact I am often surprised how wrong I was about most people.
