Why/when did jobs need to have all these benefits and perks attached to them?

It seems everything would be way simpler if jobs simply paid people a wage or salary for their services and that was it.

Why did health insurance, 401K, vacation, etc. (Now they are doing these ridiculous 10 week paternity leaves) have to become attached to a job.

Wouldn't the system be more functional to replace those perks with more pay? And cut out HR departments altogether? And then allow the employees to seek insurance and benefits elsewhere? Take vacation time off on their dollar if they want it, but otherwise keep their money?

What's ridiculous about this? Bonding with your new child is bad?

Agreed. Health insurance and vacation is for queers. I get my hands dirty seven days a week to provide for me and mine.

That's fine. You are not going to like the salary request based on those parameters.

health insurance= add $15,000 to my base salary

401K = add 5% to my base salary

vacation = add X number of weeks pay to my base salary

Let me guess. You don't want to pay all of that.

Because our tax code drives this.

Wages are taxable.

Many benefits are not

Healthcare being tied to employment is so retarded

Free market competition is a beautiful thing. I'll take a system where company's offer more incentives to attract employees.

You are correct but people will whine because they can't think outside the box. Having to change your primary doctor because you change jobs is ridiculous.
