So does a stripper with an artificial heart valve.

Most of my watch collection are Seiko pieces. Working on collecting parts to get my dad's old Seiko chronographs working again, he's always had several Seikos, his father had an early digital Seiko that I now have too.

I don’t understand how watches haven’t gone away like the VHS player.
It’s like paying 10,000$ for a telegraph machine.

Jewelry for men. No one wants to wear much of anything other wedding bands and class rings.

Watches are meant to be pretty; phones are still best for time keeping.

I've never really understood how Rolex seems to be desired over IWC, Omega, Breitling, etc.

Is that really what you believe? Because I can think of 5 brands i would buy before Rolex. I'm buying a vintage omega ploprof this week. I consider omega inferior to Rolex but I don't think they are the gold standard. Great at marketing though. How many people do you know who own a rolex? Now a Patek?

Not a watch connoisseur by any means. Bought my wife a Breitling. I know keeping up with time on your wrist is superfluous. Be that is may, I do like their watches. Considering buying an Aviator line for myself.

I'd appreciate your advice regarding Breitling.

At the end of the day , it does not matter about outsourcing. There is Rolex and there are watches…

Marketing is a hell if a drug

Rolex makes very, very good tool watches. They basically invented the genre.

Rolex does not make the best watches.

I buy/sell vintage watches. There's a lot of young guys starting to get into them. I love them because its a mix of several interests. History, engineering, art...etc.

Honestly, vintage is the most accessible way to enjoy them imo. I can buy 5 or 6 very well made vintage Hamiltons for the price of a modern Khaki. I probably have like 60 watches right now, and have spent about $4k on everything.

Its all about finding deals, just like with anything else.

That is better directed to Broke. Breitling is one of the few brands I have never owned. I have nothing against them and have been very close to buying a Navitimer on multiple occasions simply because it is one of "those" watches.

At the end of the day, I suggest buying what you like and never get caught up to much in "value". A Toyota Camry or Corolla is probably the best value in all of the automotive world. However, if you don't like it what is the point. If there wasn't value in looks and style the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Every time I’ve looked at one that piqued my interest, I’ve thought “I like the case, but I don’t like it enough to justify the price considering the pedestrian movement inside…”

I wanted a Grand Seiko for the precision of the movement and the ‘In your face Switzerland’ history.

So I looked at them in Tokyo and though I liked them they just didn’t have enough presence on the wrist to justify the cost. At least to me. Sadly.

I went to an AD last week and tried on several things including the Avenger 42 Night Mission. I love that thing, the ceramic case is incredible, but that price on a strap with a fairly basic movement just sent me back go the Tudor counter.

Otherwise, it’s the equivalent of walking into a dealership and asking for a “German car”.

This is correct. Although I like German cars, the idea of buy a "german"

Porsche Cayenne - made of VW parts in Slovakia
BMW X5 - made in South Carolina
Mercedes GL - made in Tuscaloosa

(honorable mention, Lexus RX made in Ontario Canada eh?)

Kinda idiotic. Definitely not German.

What is the board opinion between a Hamilton or Seiko at the $1000 or less mark.

Depends very, very heavily on the individual watch. Do you have anything in particular in mind?

I have tried to like them, but they seem to be just another brand occupying a price point. But I could be wrong.

The Jazzmaster viewmatic or Gent Quartz.

Not sure on the Seiko, something of similar style to the jazz master.

“Swiss made” mattering, at all, died with Swatch. Anyone considering spending real money on a watch needs to research the watch itself

That's not how the $20k golf cart for the neighborhood set works, but I know you know that. The Venn diagram of bourbon bros, super expensive watch people, and golf cart bros, is a single circle.
