The logic is not that swimming is just as dangerous as motorcycles. The logic is that avoiding the thing itself (motorcycle) is the only way to avoid dying on a motorcycle in the city. That's a silly jump to conclusions. There are a variety of ways to avoid death and dismemberment that fall short of simply not ever riding a bike. In the same way that there are a variety of ways short of simply not entering the water is the way to avoid drowning.

You keep using examples that are not comparable because the high risk factor is not considered.

Better use would be Automobile collisions vs Motorcycle collisions on the roadway.

Cars/Trucks make up 95% of transportation on all roads

Motorcycles make up 3% of transportation on all roads

----per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists are nearly 5 times more likely to be injured and 28 times more likely to die in a crash compared to people in passenger cars...

I am not comparing the activities!

It's the logic that because someone might die on a motorcycle, I simply won't ride a motorcycle. That's a simplistic way to approach life. That's like saying, the only way to choke on hard candy is to eat hard candy; therefore, I shall not eat hard candy.

It's jumping past a lot of things that mitigate harm.

Going back to the swimming example. While it's true that not entering water is a way to avoid drowning, one could also ... learn how to swim! Or exercise caution during riptides, wearing a life preserver or always having a lifeguard around. One doesn't need to completely avoid the water to not drown.

I'm saying the way people act, you'd think just riding a motorcycle is like spinning the chamber on a revolver and pointing it at your head. It's just absurd fear mongering.

the vast majority of people never have the opportunity or desire to ride a motorcycle. We don’t live in Vietnam.

A lot of people recreationally use heroin and never get addicted. Why should you let the risk of death or addiction stop you from doing heroin?

shite I still have about 10 of my kids mx bikes from when they raced. One of them still does but he’s starting lsu engineering so I’m sure that’s gonna stop for a while. I agree with most everything you said and while bike sales are down compared to the 80s &90s, race attendance has been pretty steady and good.

This one hits close to home;

Beginning of last month, my nephew, who is 19, was on his bike riding on a 2 lane highway with a 55 MPH speed limit. Minding his own business when a woman in a van coming off a side road pulls right out in front of him and broadsided him. Next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital with a couple of broken ribs, a plate in his mouth, a concussion, and a broken arm. Doctors said the riding gear that he was wearing saved his life. He had an angel on his shoulder.

My point is, a lot of times it's not the bike riders, it's the other drivers on the road that you have to worry about because most times they don't give a frick.

OT boomers- the streets and highways are full of Nissans running red lights and going 25 over the speed limit while texting

Also OT boomers- why doesn’t anyone ride motorcycles anymore?

These are the same people who will go to the mat that it's downright irresponsible parenting to NOT track your wife and kids at all times via a phone app.

I don't know. Why not? The main ones being legality and loss of employment. Without such restrictions? Most people probably would.

Young people don’t even leave the house anymore much less ride bikes. Motorcycles are boomer behavior for dentist and lawyers … or young “culture”

Bikes aren’t dangerous unless you’re doing stupid stuff like speeding, stunts, or misjudging corners or debri. It’s the drivers of the automobiles that are the real danger to a motorcycle. Why it’s best to ride where they are lower in numbers IMO.
