Why is “Thou shall not steal” a commandment?

This seems like something man would’ve been far more concerned with than a messiah who teaches material possessions don’t matter at all.
Just doesn’t make a lot of sense to say material possessions shouldn’t matter at all, and then say one of the worst things you can do is take someone else’s material possessions.

Moses was a man and not a messiah teaching about material possessions.

Probably because people want to kill thieves.

I thought Moses got the commandments from God. I could be wrong.

Moses was the medium for the ten commandments. Everyone sucked at following them, therefore Jesus had to do what Jesus did.

It's ok to steal if you just live by the New Testament and are Methodist.

Because Moses was the greatest king ever and recognized that a stable society requires respect for private property and protection thereof.

Like taking all of someone's food, resulting in their death? I agree... NBD.

It’s not like they were only dealing with stolen iPads back then. You can still steal food, livestock, children, clothing and other essentials.

Like the commandments against covetry and adultery, it’s about respecting others and not causing strife.
If you steal a car, the victim isn’t the car.

I prefer the Old Testament anyway.
Gloom and doom and murder and war and sex.
Not the hippie shite of the New Testament.
Give me old school smiting.

It’s heathens like you who forced Moses to die for our sins

Because God said it is...Duh

Then when Moses built the ark and put all the animals in it because his coat of many colors was too big, so Abraham put him on an altar to sacrifice him since he made water into wine and stuff.

Here’s your problem. No where in the Bible does it say that.
Material possessions matter, they just are of secondary importance to matters of eternity.
Jesus said that you fulfill all of the commandments by loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself. By stealing from your neighbor, you elevate yourself above him in the most egregious way possible, which is against the will of God.
