re: Why is the NOLA metro so poorly served by restaurant chains?

This question has been asked for decades now, since the explosion of chain restaurants started. Although the lack of good workers, real estate, etc are all a very small part of it, the real and long-standing reason is that why would anyone go to Chili's in NOLA when you can literally pick any of a hundred restaurants nearby that are infinitely better? That is why shitty chains do not survive in NOLA. So, why would those companies choose to try here when they know it will be difficult to beat family restaurants that are better?
Nola, even it’s suburbs, are really old cities and due to surrounding swamp and lake their isn’t much room to expand outward. Unique situation combined with having a fantastic local food culture means little room for chains. Most big cities have their old local restaurants downtown and the sprawling suburbs are full of chains because the suburbs are new and expanding outward and have favorable demographics and not much local competition

Because Metairie has enough for the whole goddamn metro area

Median household income in New Orleans is 45k ( I don't even know how that's possible) which is low. I imagine most of the population can't afford to eat out much.

CFA was in Kenner since the 80s/early 90s. It just wasn’t popular yet.
I think you’re only a decade or 3 off.

Because the NOLA area still has a lot of mom and pop restaurants with really good food that these frozen food chains can't compete with.

Simple, really, we don't patronize or want that shite here. We have too many places with real chefs and cooks to rely on places with boil-in-bag food.
Half the population of NO can't afford to eat out at places like that.
So that's not it.

There are plenty of mom and pops that are are about the same and cheaper than chain restaurants. They can be cheaper because the mom and pop restaurants pocket all the cash and don't pay taxes on cash sales.

New Orleans has more local restaurants per capita than any other city in America (unless that has changed in the past 10 years).

Nope.
They're priced the same, more-or-less. I will almost always choose the local place, unless "family pressure" is applied.

There were Chick Fil As in other Louisiana markets many years before they opened on the south shore. I think it has to do with lack of suitable employees.
And as for OP, omg Nola doesn’t have enough shitty FF restaurants. Lmao. fricking stupid.

That would actually be Juneau. Coffee shops too.

Is this a real question?

It's hard to see how this possibly makes anybody's list of top 100 gripes about "the NOLA metro."

Yep, wasn't it right across from the McDonald's by the movie theater?

How do you think you know so much about Nola eating out habits?

I do remember they used to have a worker with a tray of free samples of chick Fil a nuggets. That shite was delicious as a kid. Also, I still find it interesting that the mall had an ice skating rink. Seems so odd.

I remember as a kid there was one Burger King and that was on Carrollton and Claiborne. This was the early 70's.
Sure, but there was a Royal Castle at Carrollton and Hampson before that.
