Just buy grass fed and find local farmers in your area

$16.99/lb for choice and $13.99/lb for select here in southern MS. Never thought I would see a mediocre whole ribeye rack sell for north of $200 crazy times. Pre-Covid same whole rack was sub $100. There isn’t a cattle shortage it’s feed, slaughterhouse and transportation driven.

Buy an entire calf. Found a farmer years ago.

That's the catch. Everyone I've talked to trying to do that same is told that there's a 2-3 year waitlist.

I guess this problem has eased up some, but for a while, even if you paid for the cow directly. It was a 6-12 month wait for slaughtering.

If your farmer is butchering the cow himself, I'd keep that to yourself. Don't want the USDA coming after him for selling unlicensed, uninspected products.

Hi Neighbor has “Un-Graded” steaks from Mexico. Ribeye and filet. You have to know how to look for marbling, but they are good if you catch a good cow.

I've gotten great deals buying ungraded whole cuts from Winn Dixie or Shopper's Value. Especially if you can find ungraded beef tenderloin.

It's hard to tell what sale prices should be for local stores in south LA. I think some of the supply chain for grocers is still being affected by Hurricane Ida damage. This thought is based on most of the grocery stores around me either not have a weekly sale ad, or cutting back to one page of average deals.

We turn their feedstock into fuel at a huge deficit.

When they started their corn ethanol bullshite brisket went from 20-30 to 80 overnight it seemed.

And you think I am kidding. They really want to do that- and they will do it in the name of climate change

As stupid as that sounds, I know it's true...

frick grass-fed beef. It's ok as ground beef and for roasts that you cook low and slow are ok but steaks are tough and taste like grass.

I will use select for steaks if I can get a bargin. A few months ago I bought two whole select strips for $4.99 lb. I then used those dry-aging bag things and dry-aged them for 30 days. It lost a good bit of moisture but the end result was a very nice dry-aged New York Strip. When cooked, these steaks were very favorable and moist despite losing some moisture during the aging process.

They could blame transportation costs, or feed costs...but ultimately it's because people are paying it. If people stop buying ribeyes at $21 per pound, the price will drop.

Costco seems unaffected as well as Albertsons and Hi Nabor for the most part, but yesterday when I went to the Denham Wal-Mart and Sams it was like the zombie apocalypse had happened. I have never seen either store like that. (Granted Sams is remodeling but they had whole sections of refrigeration units with no meat in them)

The corn crop is down by 20+% in Brazil because of FROST. Yes, frost in Brazil. But but Global Warming. That has had an effect on corn globally.

fresh market

I love Fresh Market and that's where I go for meat/seafood, but damn I am so tired of going because the ad says XYZ is on sale and then that item doesn't even exist in the store.

Two items I went for yesterday due to the ad weren't even a buyable item in the store.
