Many governments will tell you stories of sex trafficking and some will bring up morality, what they won't tell you is the real reason why prostitution is illegal: taxes. It's difficult to tax a prostitute's income from sex work because the work is off the grid and the vast majority of the transactions are cash only. Legally-owned brothels would help with the tax thing but there are far too many independent and upscale women who do it independent of the brothel system. They would get to keep 100% of their income and that is something the government just can't abide by, especially when some of those girls are bringing home north of $1,000 an hour.

The Internet has given women a lot more power, and many of them are reaping the $$$ associated with stripping and prostitution without the actual sex or contact. Now they can showcase themselves on websites to hordes of lonely losers without having to even be in the same state as them. Even underage girls are making big money on platforms like TikTok by dancing around half naked.
A good looking woman who's willing to be a prostitute would be crazy to actually do it with all the lucrative options available online.

It's illegal because it's a cash only business and the government can't get it's taxes from it.
