Why is Lake Pontchartrain called a "lake"?
And not a bay? It's not a true lake. New Orleans Metro could've been known as the NOLA Bay Area

It’s technically an estuary.

Trying to rename new orleans to replicate the prosperity of another area is like renaming violent neighorhoods in the hopes that they'll become more peaceful.

Which is something new orleans has done multiple times already...

re: Why is Lake Pontchartrain called a "lake"?
For starters it's not a bay

The Rigolets opening is really narrow so calling it a lake is close enough. Outside of the really narrow Rigolets and Chef Menteur Pass for the NOLA queers openings Lake Pontchartrain is closed off. It's one of those "good enough" things.

Lake Borgne on the other hand. Yeah that one is fricked up.

It has to do with naval taxation in the French colonial period. Ocean going vessel were taxed at a higher rate than inland vessels. So, the early explorers called it a "lake" to avoid the seafaring tax on their vessels. By the time the crown realized what was going on, then name had stuck.

Well seeings how it was there during the civil war it’s just a matter of time before they change the name. Maybe you’ll get your wish of it becoming a bay

Sure. And that's even narrower than the Rigolets.

Why aren't you asking this question about Lake Borgne instead? It is a saltwater bay. Lake Pontchartrain is a lake.

Why is False River called a "River" when it's actually a Lake

Lake Borgne was a lot more land locked when it was named.
