Why aren't you asking this question about Lake Borgne instead? It is a saltwater bay. Lake Pontchartrain is a lake.

If Lake Pontchartrain isnt a like then neither is Lake Maurepas or Lake Poulourde, Grassy Lake, Lake Verret, Lake Pelto, Lake Decade, Calcasieu Lake, Catahoula Lake, Claiborne Lake, Cross Lake, Grand Lake, Lac des Allemands, Lake Bistinea, Lake Salvador, Sabine Lake, and White Lake.

Where is the red stick in Baton Rouge

I'm 100% positive it's the original from the Indian days.....

quote:

Wondering what "Baton Rouge" means? Story has it that long ago, this area in Louisiana along the mighty Mississippi River was occupied by two indigenous tribes, the Houma Indian Tribe and the Bayougoula Indian Tribe. To settle a border conflict between them, the tribes used a cypress pole to mark the boundary dividing their hunting grounds at an area now known as Scott’s Bluff.

This marker on the east bank of the Mississippi River caught the eye of French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville while making his way upriver during an exploration in 1699. He and his men saw the bloodied cypress pole on the bluff, adorned with animal parts and stained red from the tribes’ latest haul, and dubbed the area "le bâton rouge," French for "Red Stick".

In 1810, the area became part of the colonies and in 1817, the town was officially incorporated as “Baton Rouge.” Locals still lovingly refer to the city as "The Red Stick."

Why did you include Toledo Bend in your list in the first place?

To complicate things, I think Lake Borgne was originally Lake Pontchartrain, but when the claimed found a bigger body of water, they freaked and renamed.

Why is Lake Borgne called a "lake"? It's even less of a lake than Pontchartrain.

It has to do with naval taxation in the French colonial period. Ocean going vessel were taxed at a higher rate than inland vessels. So, the early explorers called it a "lake" to avoid the seafaring tax on their vessels. By the time the crown realized what was going on, then name had stuck.

Half of me hopes this is made up because it is masterful if so.

What would you classify those as instead? I thought he was referencing bodies of water named lakes that aren’t really lakes. Those seem like purely lakes to me.

Just because a lake is on a river that eventually reaches the sea doesn't mean it's not a lake. To not be a lake it has to receive tidal flow into it and contain brackish water.

My point is....if hes saying that Lake Pontchartrian isnt a "Lake" then neither are all the other Lakes that I listed.

I disagree with the OP...they are all Lakes IMO

A good word to use to figure out if someone is from around the area or not. Not as good as Natchitoches but close.
