On the spot, yes. Over time, no. I have changed the way I think on a lot of things. Just takes time and conversation.

Plus, I think most people are incredibly lazy intellectually. The vast majority of people are going to believe whatever is accepted by their peers and put little, if any, real thought into it. It's a lot easier to just believe "I didn't come from no monkey" than to put the effort into actually understanding how evolution works, for example.

I just think we don’t place value in conviction anymore. People that understand why they believe something and can articulate why they believe it are less prone to being easily swayed or offended when someone disagrees with them.

As my previous post stated, what i find personally frustrating is when people with poor convictions resort to juvenile arguments or misdirection to make up for their lack of conviction. You see it all the time.

The fact that it takes time is evidence that it is difficult.

And I'm willing to be that you resisted quite heavily in the beginning.

Revealing of what? I was curious.

If you believe something and quickly change your tune just because someone told you something different, you have no convictions. Obviously this doesn’t really ring true if the belief we’re talking about is that the sky is pink or something else objectively false.

But if we’re talking about subjective things like different political beliefs, many will be shaped by personal experience so it’s not exactly easy to just switch your belief unless something significant triggers that change.

If I’m an open borders guy and just shout from rooftops to let everyone in, short of an illegal killing my whole family, it wouldn’t be easy to John Kerry my stance just by discussion alone.

OP asking about talking to a family in a Southern city about religion reeks of arrogance and myopic thought

It was a rhetorical question referencing my own personal experience

arrogance is a consistent feature in people who can’t form logical vs emotional arguments

I disagree, I think it’s anger and fear. Arrogance is is more an action or lack thereof than an emotion, so by definition it wouldn’t stop you from forming an argument that is not emotional. Granted, it will likely be illogical.

Trump is a perfect example of this behavior. He is a polarizing figure in today's society. A lot of people are very hardlined on Trump one way or another.

Most of our core beliefs revolve around politics and religion. Bringing up the POTUS in this discussion seems like an obvious example.

Isn’t this usually a problem for less intelligent people? I’d say either that or the ego thing someone else mentioned. Could be both as well. A dumb person who thinks they can’t be wrong is scary.

Can you spell whatever you’re trying to say out like I’m dumb, because I am unable to follow you. Are you saying I’m shortsighted based on the fact that I no longer practice a religion?

Because leftists don't want their beliefs challenged; they want total world domination and totalitarian control. Thought is antithetical to the radical left.

Confirmation bias among a ton of other biases and fallacies. Also, in this day and age of instant opinions, people still think they are entitled to them with no defense. If you post something stupid on FB, you deserve to be yelled at.

You are wrong in the fact that you believe it is unique to "leftists"
