Why is it so difficult to discuss topics that challenge our beliefs

Whether it be religion, politics, science, race, etc.

Seems like any conversation that challenges us to be genuinely introspective to the degree that it puts our beliefs to the test is met with hostility. Why do we close our minds to certain topics?

People on forums seek reaffirmation of their ideas not a challenge to them.

Because of our ego. You aren't going to believe something that you think, or know, is wrong so your ego tells you that all of your beliefs are correct. While, at the same time, conflicting beliefs that others hold must be wrong because they differ from yours.

In person it's rarely been an issue. I think it's people who are insecure in their beliefs and afraid to learn.

Bc people just aren't very smart about what they "believe in".

I have no problem discussing my beliefs with people that can argue rationally and logically.

Unfortunately, such people are needles hiding in stacks of other needles.

People who are uncomfortable discussing their beliefs are usually uncomfortable because they don't know enough about them to verbally justify why they feel strongly about them. Religion is one of the main ones, politics is another. When questioned about it people get defensive because they haven't ever given much thought to why they believe it. I was super religious until my early 20s and when I finally gave the "why do i believe this" some serious thought it ended with me realizing they did not do anything positive in my life.

I've learned lately that every situation isn't as black and white as it seems. There is a lot of gray areas .

Because certain groups of people are shitty and don’t show respect to others beliefs.

Every time we have a religion thread, the same posters automatically start shotposting about how stupid people are that believe in God.

Same goes for politics. The go to argument when discussing political philosophy is to just start calling someone an ___-ist and derail any hope at honest debate. I read an article about a college debate competition won by a HBU school where that was the strategy they used. Whatever the topic was, they would turn it into a discussion about race and derail the opposing teams arguments. All the responses degenerated into defenses as to why they weren’t racist instead of debating the question. You can “win” an argument without having any real convictions by just asking indefensible questions and no one in modern society will call people out on it.

Sign of the times I suppose.

Majority of people don't care about facts. They believe what they want to believe even if you present facts right in front of them.

Also most people have confirmation bias.

Because emotion>>>>>>facts in our current environment.

People actually say things like “I will not be satisfied until there are ZERO (homeless, poor, etc) people in America” and they believe it is possible.

Just curious; I'd engage but it would be too lengthy and while I'm at work I wouldn't be able to respond as necessary

gotcha, it wasn't an overnight thing and it wasn't a comfortable transition. basically everything i believed in started falling apart the more i investigated why i believed it or investigated why the church told me to believe it. was a 4 or 5 year transition from somebody who went to mass daily and confession a couple times a week to being agnostic.

This,

It isn’t seen as a challenge to one’s belief because the opposing opinion isn’t seen as legitimate enough to present a challenge. The issues mentioned are generally beliefs that have been established over a lifetime. Opposition isn’t seen as a challenge - it’s seen as an insult.
