the catholic religion
I don't know why but nearly every person I have met that lost their faith was at one time Catholic. Not really saying anything negative about them but it's just been my personal experience.

Because of our ego. You aren't going to believe something that you think, or know, is wrong so your ego tells you that all of your beliefs are correct. While, at the same time, conflicting beliefs that others hold must be wrong because they differ from yours.
Interesting. We usually associate ego with arrogance, although that’s not really a precise definition. I’ve met some seemingly humble people who, when discussing religion, become angry and put up walls.
We usually say the most bullheaded people have the most fragile egos, but is it actually the opposite?

I disagree. Ever tried to tell your southern family you no longer follow their religion?

I'll kill you if you think I'm unwilling to discuss why you and everyone else is wrong.

My whole life a certain priest was held up as an example of holiness whose life I should try to imitate. Turns out he had a few mistresses and diddled some kids. That wasn't the bad part, church leadership had known about it for 5 years before the info became public and had just removed him from duties and tried to keep it quiet. When you're told that god personally calls people to the priesthood and then you see first hand the types he is calling it makes you reconsider. This isn't the only reason i left the church but it was one of the incidents that got me thinking. Peoples willingness to turn a blind eye to harmful behavior just to protect their religion is pretty dangerous imo. this isn't specific to religion. you see it a lot in politics as well.

because they are "beliefs".

Melt
Lol, that's the most common response.
If you anger them you are a cuck.

Because people tie their identities to their belief system, thus shutting down when challenged. It's all about that ego.

Isn’t this usually a problem for less intelligent people? I’d say either that or the ego thing someone else mentioned. Could be both as well. A dumb person who thinks they can’t be wrong is scary.

gotcha, it wasn't an overnight thing and it wasn't a comfortable transition. basically everything i believed in started falling apart the more i investigated why i believed it or investigated why the church told me to believe it. was a 4 or 5 year transition from somebody who went to mass daily and confession a couple times a week to being agnostic.
Maybe the Catholic church is the problem. Maybe you should try something else.
Do you believe in the Bible? If so, then definitely try something else. I'm a Baptist and we teach the Bible without "I think".

Usually it's a liberal that wants to challenge my beliefs and their beliefs aren't just different but completely insane. I'm not going to entertain that.

Yeah, I think this is the biggest root cause. Good insight

it isn't always dumb people who think they can't be wrong. I think it has more to do with how somebody was raised and educated than their actual intelligence level. I know a mechanical engineer who believes that Rome fell because of gay people.
