There's a line one of Raymond Chandlers novels where private eye Philip Marlowe says the cops expect to be lied to, you just have to be careful not to overdo it

You can tell the police lies, just never give them a false name or identification. LRS 14:108

OJ Simpson and Casey Anthony lied to the police and got off of their most serious charges against them by doing so.

but there is a CRIME for lying to cops??

In my state here's the law
quote:

837.05 False reports to law enforcement authorities.—
(1)(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) or subsection (2), a person who knowingly gives false information to a law enforcement officer concerning the alleged commission of any crime, commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

That's what they got former secretary of state and insurance commissioner Jim Brown on.

Maybe they should install red light cams to scan for the thin blue line stickers and fine those without.

Lying to the feds is a big no-no.

Lying to state and locals is touchy. You can do it but along the way if they can make an obstruction of justice case you have a problem.

Basic lying to locals is OK, usually.
