Why is 'horrific' bad, but 'terrific' good?

"Horrific" comes from the Latin word horrificus, which means "causing horror." It's always had a negative connotation.

"Terrific," on the other hand, evolved from the Latin terrificus, which meant "causing terror." Over time, though, its meaning shifted from "terrifying" to "exciting" and eventually to the modern positive sense of "excellent."

Over time, its meaning has shifted from terrifying to exciting. And eventually, excellent.

Fantastic is another. Now it usually means great. Originally it mean so unreal it's the stuff of fantasy, which is not necessarily good.

it’s like exhilarating, some of the most exhilarating times I’ve had have been part terrifying, part exciting, and I can’t imagine any drug feeling like the prolonged adrenaline rush

I'm old enough to see the word 'goat' go from meaning the one who lost the big game to being the absolute best.

It's mind bottling.

Why do they call it "taking a dump" and not "leaving a dump"?

My guess is that it's comparable to taking a 'nap'. Meaning to step out of whatever is going on and set aside some time to do a thing.

Same applies to take a wiz, leak, piss, etc...
