There's the problem that gambling tends to be useful for crime: it's a great way to launder money, if done correctly.

Don't forget the ole miss rumor that LSU was using the bell to pay players

It's bad unless the government gets tax revenue. Then it's ok.

Because of it's shady history and also the government doesn't want people to be able to make decisions on their own .

Or just move to a consumption based form of taxation where it's impossible to evade taxes in the first place and you don't have to waste money policing such things.

It is of a very narrow mind to not understand why gambling is largely illegal. I'm not telling you that you should agree with this, just understand why.
Gambling will inherently lead to fraud, since the sole purpose of it is to take money from one entity ( a person, casino) and give it to another. Even drugs provides a product for those willing to pay for it. (Prostitution, too, should be illegal, but that is for another thread)
With the sole purpose is money exchange it will lead to fixing of games, rigged slot machines, "loaded" dice, etc. as the crooks look to get any advantage to take money from others.
Another issue, although less of a reason to me, yet important nonetheless, is the addiction issue that gamblers can easily get.Although self inflicted, gambling addiction affects very many others (family, children)

Gambling simply is too much of troublesome industry that preys on the misinformed. Lotteries are the same and how they prey on the lower class.

The sole purpose of most every job is to take money from one entity and give it to another.

There are a ton of myopic answers in this thread. It's illegal, because it was banned at some point.

If it were legal for just anyone to take bets, can you imagine the amount of claims flooding the courts of people who don't pay one bets? The courts don't want to take the cases? Well I guess the deadbeats will have to pay somehow...

It is legal. It is regulated. I don't see how it could be legal but not be regulated in any civilized society.

With sports betting, the leagues themselves typically are against it.

Now all of this said, that doesn't mean we have a perfect system. But just saying oh it should be legal is a little short sighted, to say the least

I'm a socially conservative person, but the fact that gambling and prostitution are illegal is laughable. I'm more shocked that greedy governments (local, state, federal) haven't pushed for legalization so they can tax the piss of it.

This.

It's hard to regulate and makes money laundering easier. If Uncle Sam isn't getting his fair cut, he doesn't want anyone getting any.

Don't fall for the it's not good for people/society because if that was the case smoking would be illegal. Big Government cares about money and power.

Because some degenerates can't control themselves and the government punishes everyone by trying to help out the minority.

It's not, come park your arse at my casino. I'll give you 20% off the crab leg buffet.

Spend some money though.
