No clue. Same for prostitution.

I personally never understood this. I thought people could do whatever they wanted with their money.

I think it's the same argument as drugs. It's illegal because only criminals do it so it needs to be against the law to prevent criminal activity.

The same as being able to pay for a back massage, but if I pay the same person to massage my cock it's against the law..

nothing intrinsically wrong with gambling, IMO...however, like prostitution, there is a whole lot of other undesireable stuff that results from it that makes some societies want to outlaw it.

fwiw, in a controlled situation, gambling can be just fine (i.e. casinos or lottery).

I found a reasonable explanation on reddit:

quote:

But there are practical considerations.

There's the problem of unregulated gambling: if you're going to allow gambling, you need to have some sort of system to make sure that the games are "fair" (e.g. the house's advantage comes from the rules, not stacking decks, weighting dice, or otherwise "cheating"). A system like that costs a lot of money, and is ripe for corruption.

There's the problem that gambling tends to be useful for crime: it's a great way to launder money, if done correctly.

There's the problem that gambling attracts crime (because a large amount of "uncontrolled" money is present in most gambling houses).

I have always found this argument ridiculous. And yet states allow Lotteries which are the worst possible odds in the history of gambling.

I think it should be legal, along with drugs and prostitution. But don't ignore the fact that the gambling bug is just as bad as crackrock.

Make all the bookies declare themselves and pay taxes. Go after the others for tax evasion.
