Power density and operational differences. Tractors make very little power per liter compared to cars and they aren't thermal cycled nearly as hard as car engines are.

Do you drive your tractor every day?

Present day cars last way longer than tractors.

Most tractors/mowers/lawn equipment is shite these days.

Tractors are easy to work on and repair. But I've always wanted a front end loader on my old F250.

Heavy metal made to go slow is a lot easier to pull off than thin metal made to go fast.

What engine does the old tractor have? 2 cyl Perkins?

The guy above who posted about the high speed friction made sense. I drive my vehicles until they fall apart. I've squeezed 300k out of cars before.

I get at least 300k out of every vehicle I buy. I sold a Nissan Sentra with 294k miles on it to a guy that saw me pull up at a gas station in it. He said "what's wrong with it"? I told him "nothing at all and the air blows cold enough to freeze you out". He made me an offer on the spot. I think he's still driving it.

My wife's 04 trailblazer has 320k on the odometer and I'm getting ready to sell it to. It's in fantastic shape and runs like a top.

Why don’t home appliances last like they did in the 50’s/60’s?

If if doesnt break, you don’t buy another one for a while. It has to break so the economy keeps growing. Is constant growth unsustainable? Yes, but that doesn’t stop us from thinking that constant growth is possible.

We certainly have the technology to both make cars that last for decades, and are much more fuel efficient than at present, but that doesn’t keep the economy on a steady growth.

If you put an hour meter on a car like they have on tractors, they really do last a long time. Avg speed over the life of a car is usually around 30-35mph so that’s around 5000 hours of operation by the time you get to 150k miles.

Wait a minute.

I guess 294 is close enough.

maybe a 4240 or a 7800. Try working on a new 8 wheel John Deere without calling a mechanic

Easy, because my tractor doesn't have some retarded Active Fuel Management System made out of plastic.

Is this really a thread?

Tractors don't travel that many miles. A diesel truck could handle as many hours as a tractor if you only drove it 15-20 mph for short distances for 40 years.

Hell I wish modern tractors lasted like that!

Best tractor ever made was a 806 Farmall with a 12 valve Cummins. Indestructible

I have a John Deere tractor and a GMC. Compare only the parts of the vehicle that are on a tractor. Wide open RPM on the tractor is somewhat low and the h.p. is low for the cu. in.

Next check the actual hours on each. My truck is low for the year and is still much higher than the tractor. It's likely I'll die long before the tractor gets to where the truck is now.

Truck is an '05 and has had no more trouble with ANY of it's parts than the '04 tractor's minimum.

The average car on the road is over 10 years old and has far more hours of use than the average tractor. I would be that total hours of use a car/truck gets more.

They're operated very differently and on the engine side that's the primary difference. Tractors spend lots of time at a set engine speed, where truck engines cycle through the rpm range constantly their whole lives.

I doubt it. My truck has 230k miles and only 3300ish hours. That ain't shite on a tractor. You dont have to go far to find a tractor over 5k hours

has a lot of hours

Probably less than a couple thousand if small farm tractor. 1000 hrs on a car is 80,000, if you are driving 80 the entire time.

Large high end tractors get 10-15k hours regularly, but Semis get a million miles all the time. Size of the parts help with wear...

Dog out a tractor like we dog out our cars and the tractor would die on you within a month.
