I use a 1970s tractor that has been in the family since it was new and has never had any major problems or repairs. We keep it greased and maintained. It gets used quite a bit and has a lot of hours on it. This is pretty common for tractors. Could cars/trucks be made to the same standards and last as long? The cars that are on the road that are that old are usually completely rebuilt.

My guess is that a car built to last that long would be expensive as fuark.

If a car makes it to 150,000 miles, it drove around the world 6 times. It's pretty amazing that car reliability is at an all time high by a large margin and people are still complaining. A tractor isn't exposed to near as much high speed friction.

Usually the ones that work on tractors, do exactly what you said you do. You keep it maintained. Most people do not maintain their vehicle. They look at it as they will get a different one in a couple years anyway after x amount of miles. Farmers aren't itching to buy new equipment all the time.

A car or truck can last if you take care of it.

Cars do last a long time. It’s just that a lot of people only care about having the sexy thing or don’t know shite about car maintenance.

Stick a 4.0L V8 in a tractor, add a complex cooling system, sport springs, sport shocks, twin turbos, dynamic cruise control, 5 cameras for 360 view, power seats, power steering wheel, power locks, power windows, power doors, power trunk, air filtration system, infotainment system, and then tune the engine to run in different "modes" for comfort, sport, sport+ and race, and let me know how long your tractor lasts.

The guy above who posted about the high speed friction made sense. I drive my vehicles until they fall apart. I've squeezed 300k out of cars before.

Agree. I’ve put 272k on a vehicle before. Nobody has 272k miles on a tractor from the 1970s. And, like another poster said, there are a lot more things that can break on a car. All things considered, cars are one of the few things that have gotten consistently more reliable and longer lasting in the last 40-50 years.

You ever seen a 1970-1990 Landcruiser engine? It’s basically a tractor

Gets 10-12 mpg to show for it

Tractors have diesel engines. Cars with diesel engines last longer. And tractors don't go over 20 mph or something, reduces wear and tear.

The better comparisons is a semi-truck. And they do last 1,xxx,xxx+ miles

I know how to do general maintenance and some repair on a car but other than that I don't know shite about them.

Tractor manufacturers don’t have some crappy CAFE standards that they have to adhere to.

How many miles do you think you've got on that 70s tractor?
