re: Why doesn’t I-10 go through Austin as it cuts across Texas?

I don’t know about I-10 but it is odd that there’s no major interstate highway between Houston and Austin. The nations 4th and 9th largest cities that happen to be what 150 miles apart? That don’t make no sense.
Houston and Austin are in the same state.
in·ter·state /'in(t)?r?stat/
adjective: interstate; adjective: inter-state
1. existing or carried on between states.
"interstate travel"

Well, you have to remember the Alamo for starters.

With the interstate system, the biggest factor was the military, but as the system grew politics played an even greater part in how the system was built after the military factor.
Look at routes after the 1960’s, such as our very own I49, extension of I55 to I10, I22, I69 (the OT favorite), etc., all of these routes have political reasons and some powerful congressman or senator pushing for the route.

Austin traffic may be worse than BR traffic... but at least in Austin they are building new roads and trying to keep up.
The other good thing is that it isn’t Baton Rouge.

Austin had 186,000 people when I-10 was designed. San Antonio had 587,000. There you go.
Has more to do with the military bases located in San Antonio than the population.

making I-10 go through New Orleans has a positive economic impact for the city compared to if it was called I-310, 510, 710, 910, etc.
"Let's put our business in New Orleans"
"Why?"
"Its interstate is 10, not 910."
"Well, in that case, we must."

I wish I could go back in time and tell the planners to make sure I-10 bypassed Baton Rouge.

Why would it?
It would have to take a big jog out of the way to go through Austin.
Plus, San Antonio is an OLD city. It not only outdates Austin, it was big long before Austin was. Not only is San Antonio a bigger city today, Austin was basically an overgrown town until the late 1980s. The boom has made it a big city now, but all of that growth has happened in the last 25 years.
Also, the original purpose of the Interstate Highway System was for rapid military deployment and San Antonio is Military City USA.
It doesn’t make geographic, strategic, or demographic sense for I-10 to run through Austin.

All the Mexicans in San Antonio needed a highway to get around on

Tell her not to take I-8. It's a shitty drive. She should go 40-35-20-49-10-12-10

Has anyone mentioned the presence of military bases in San Antonio? Specifically, Lackland AFB. The interstate system was partly designed as and primarily funded as a national security investment. Linking military assets was one of the original priorities. Lessons learned from WWII logistics.

Mostly this I would imagine. San Antonio was about 3x bigger than Austin in the late 60's when it was built. Also a lot of the interstate paths follow old highways so I assume there was probably already a highway that followed this route which made it way cheaper to build.

What about the inordinate number of radar carrying cops in Giddings? That place has to be one of the biggest speed traps in Texas.

I drive to Austin at least once a year. I have always taken 610 north to 290. Then 95 in Elgin to 79 in Taylor to Round Rock.or CR 110 to my people's farm.
If I'm leaving from downtown or going towards SA I'll take sh190.
On one trip late at night I got to Austin from new orleans in a little under 6.5 hours taking sh130.
(Been trying to avoid Giddings area)
I guess I should have said Georgetown/Hutto is my destination.

Did you know interstate 910 exists in Louisiana, just the state refuses to recognize the designation?
Posted on 5/29/18 at 12:03 pm to redstick13
Yes. That and twice I was pulled over "just because"
I started taking sh130 in Seguin to avoid Giddings.

Franklin on 79 is every bit as bad, if not worse. It’s one of those places where the speed steps-down 3 times coming into town and the highway is ALSO a School Zone, so it’s a double-whammy and they play it for all it’s worth.

I know it's not Austin proper but I-4 is going through Killeen/Temple. They already converted and signed 190 west of 35 as I-4
