Why doesn’t I-10 go through Austin as it cuts across Texas?

Helping my mom plan a drive from Cali to Fla. and happened to notice the path I-10 cuts across Texas. I never really paid much attention to the route of the interstate, but in Texas, I-10 seems to veer out of its way to hit San Antonio missing Austin in the process. Factor in that Austin is the state capital, it really does not make sense to me.

San Antonio was an older, bigger more established city. roads ran where history took them when/where it made sense

Probably because San Antonio has always been a major city in this country & sits almost parallel to Houston on the map going west through Texas when I-10 was built. Austin has only blown up to be a huge major city in the last 25 years. Thanks hipsters. That pretty much sums it up.

Expand that map you were looking at and view I-10 coming from the west to the east.

This does show what you are talking about, but in 1960 SA was 587K and Austin was 187K so they weren't going to bypass SA

If you are going west is it quicker to go through Austin or San Antonio?

It's the southernmost route from coast to coast. Austin is not a logical part of that route.

Do any of you look at a map?

Most marriages don't last as long as the 290 construction.
