re: Why does Louisiana continue to decline as our southern neighbors grow?

At least Dallas and Austin are nice. Houston is a depressing shithole with no green space or outdoor activity options
You clearly showed you know frick all by saying Austin is nice. And if you're including Southlake, etc., as a part of Dallas, then you have to include a lot more places in Houston than you probably visited. Houston isn't just the Southside where you caught an Uber to Hobby. Typical OT poor.
Texas is crowded. LOL. Take two days to drive across our state, fricknut, and report back. shite, even between Houston and Austin you'll go stretches without seeing much more than a windmill, a barn, and an empty flea market.
ETA: By your shitty criteria, Brusly is a crowded metropolis with killer traffic.

Compare Metairie and Kenner to suburbs outside of Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston, Nashville, etc
Metarie and Kenner are old format suburbs from the mid 20th century developed in an area with space constraints. Believe it or not, those are pretty well organized even if they are not a modern format. Those places exploded in growth in the 1940s-1970s, so it features a lot of ranch homes, smaller lots, and a street grid because that's how they developed cities back then. New Orleans was a major economic powerhouse in those days before the oil and gas hub moved to Houston.
A suburb comparable to what you'd see on the far outskirts of Atlanta, Nashville, Houston, etc. (much of them were developed since the 1970s) would be on the north shore in the newer parts of Mandeville or Covington. Maybe parts of St. George in the Baton Rouge area to some extent, but that also has a lot of areas that are purely extensions of Baton Rouge.
I understand your arguement and I 100% agree that many suburban areas in Louisiana are poorly organized. Zachary, Prarieville, most of the Florida parishes, etc. are all trying to hang on to their rural character in governance and are losing it as a consequence to developers (who apparently can build whatever they want), which means they'll have to raise taxes to develop their street network, sewers, etc.
This is a function of a heavily Catholic south Louisiana having a high degree of acceptance of private schools (and even a cultural preference) of private schools in the area. Those cities have a very competitive network of private schools as a result, which delayed the development of suburban areas (and delayed the transition of those public school districts from shitty rural schools to well funded suburban districts). Most of the highest income, wealthiest people in the Baton Rouge area or the New Orleans area still live in those cities even today.
So it's taken longer for the political organization to occur in most of those suburbs, and usually by then it's become a hodgepodge of rural development, suburban sprawl, with some higher end pockets mixed in. Livingston Parish is by far the worst suburban area by this measure.

LA might have the least racial of any state in the country

Wow. I can always tell who has never actually lived out of state in these threads.

Our state also just looks like a dump. That's a big part of it that doesn't seem to get enough attention. Just drive across the Florida state line (or even Alabama for that matter), and there's a sense of pride and that they actually take care of the place.
Our highways and roads look so neglected. It looks like nobody cares about them. Visitors see that because it’s such a jarring transition from other states.
LADOTD has 4,000 employees and none of them have any idea what a street sweeper is. Litter is never picked up. Street light bulbs along our highways are out for years before they are changed. Road debris and degraded road surfaces sit at the curb for so long that grass takes root. Road reflectors and pavement stripes are non-existent and have been for years in some areas since they are never maintained.
And I won’t even talk about how almost all of our state highways are functionally obsolete - too few lanes, poor lighting, ancient pavement, etc are the norm.
I seriously think LADOTD is so incredibly bloated and incompetent that it would be easier to completely dismantle it and start over than to try to fix it. They are holding this state back. So is Entergy.

It broke my heart to move out. I loved the land, the water, the food, the music, if I had a zillion dollars I'd have five boats and 200 guns and live the dream chasing fish and birds all over that state.
But for those of us that have to work, there is a lot working against us. My car insurance dropped BIGLY when I left. The schools got better. The crime is nonexistent.
Exactly.
Quality of life is so much better in so many other places.

This is a major talking point for the people that defend LA. The food and culture. With the way you can ship food these days, you can whip up a damn good Cajun meal in Wyoming.

Our priorities are way out of whack.
How much does the state spend on Saints and Pels(including venues) and that's just a start. We allow our education system to be the worst in the country, we squandered the chance and rebirth after Katrina, BP and think we got screwed.
We truly are a confederacy of dunces.

Austin is blue, Dallas / Ft Worth are bland and elect the likes of Crockett. Houston may as well be 3rd world, and its surrounding suburbs, no better.
you have to be kidding with this shite right?
Austin has a tons of suburbs that are awesome, access to water areas that are awesome. Sure downtown is blue but who gives a frick in a state like texas?
Metroplex....bland? huh? let me guess NOLA is awesome right? Ill take the culture of Dallas anyday over NOLA. much rather be eating at a cafe and shopping in highland park area than any place in nola. I mean southlake, preston hollow, flower mound etc are all way way way nicer than anything in LA.
as far as houston being 3rd world.....wtf are you talking about? and the suburbs being no better? wtf? so river oaks, rice village, memorial, west university etc are 3rrd world?
so league city, friendswood, clearlake, pearland on the southside look third world? the woodlands, katy, sugar land, cypress etc are 3rd world?
its like you have zero clue of any part of the 3 big cities in texas, Especially houston. the south houston suburbs alone are nicer than anything in Louisiana and they are not even considered special in terms of houston suburbs.

Our system of government and our tax code combined with our French/Spanish roots had us on a terrible foundation.

Poor political leadership in a nutshell. For years I thought I would go home to retire. Not anymore.
The state has so much potential. It’s a shame.

Because Louisianan's are only good at complaining about problems. They are damn good at it. The state as a whole is fat, poorly educated and continues to vote for the lowest common denominator. The issues that the state as whole have will require some short to long term pain to right the ship and the populace of the state doesn't have the appetite for this so it will continue to be the status quo of just being a bunch of whiny bitches who elect the lowest common denominator.

Found the butthurt houston resident ^
I lived in Houston for two years and couldnt wait to get out. I’ve seen the whole city. It’s a crowded swampy shithole.

Yeah, people like to crap on Louisiana, and it rightfully has it's merits, but NOLA is a world class city for various reasons as stated.

Without Nola, Louisiana would just be another Mississippi with slightly more culture in the south central part.
People choosing to stay know what they’re giving up. If you are lucky enough to make a good living and can afford private school then the rest of the incompetence you deal with is manageable.

Well, Louisiana is poor and corrupt. So….there’s that.
