If you mean people like me, middle aged and been to too many concerts and shot too many weapons w/out hearing protection (not to mention as a kid having a firecracker blow up on neck just beneath my ear)... it's because we can't hear worth a damn.

My case: I lost range for high tones in one ear, low tones in the other, and some midrange in both. So I gotta use speaker or headphones/earphones/buds just to hear the whole conversation.

TLDR: Speak up sonny I can't hear ya, damn whippersnappers! Git off'n mah lawn!

Annoying af.

Almost equally annoying: Geriatrics who have their ringer on the loudest setting and let that shite ring like 3 or 4 times before picking it up.

It's this and a complete and total lack of respect or care for anyone but themselves that permeates their everyday lives

Absolutely this!

It tends to be the same people who feel the need to be on the phone with someone constantly as a way of asserting to others around them how alpha or needed they are.

They will call someone over petty shite, “just to clarify,” when they could’ve easily determined it for themselves.

It’s a way of attracting attention and inserting themselves into the domain of others around them.

Usually a loud mouthed douche bag at an airport.

Usually at a Wal-Mart to distract others that they are paying with an EBT card.

And that said, I doubt you run into any professionals who are talking mutual funds or vacation in Breckenridge on a speaker phone in public. Most who do this tend to vacation in their cousin's boyfriend's god-uncle's in an adjacent neighborhood.

I heard a business owner fire an employee on speaker phone in the gondola at beaver creek.

I hate taking on speaker phone. I do it while driving and typing at my computer only.

A blue tooth head set to use while working is amazing, so are conference calls on speaker. I feel like a moron holding a phone to my ear now.

Same reason they blast their racist, homophobic, and sexist "music" for all to hear.

It's simple. Daddy didn't pay attention to them early on in life now they have to make sure everyone around them knows that they have friends

I think they all feel like the more people they are seen by, the higher chance that they will be "discovered" for a TV role, Reality show, or some kind of artist. It happened to that one guy back in 1980-something and could happen again.

Producers are always scouting folks at 7-11 at midnight.

I think I get a pass as I have just one functioning ear. The speaker just works better for me. I don’t like the Bluetooth configuration.

What drives me crazy is the big sales talk and or manager guy talking in public al la “you tell Ted he better have that report on my desk by 5 o’clock or his arse is gone.” That’s about as bad as it gets in public.

They aren’t thinking reality show, just insecurity. Talking on the phone means they have friends, it’s a way to broadcast to everyone their popularity.

FIFY. Ever hear 3-4 of them in a conversation? It's like a shouting match to see who can talk the loudest.

ETA: I should add that this is based on my Navy experience. It was hard to sleep with 10 black dudes playing spades 30 feet away shouting as if they had just won the lottery.

In my job I'm on the phone almost all day, so a headset was given to me when I started. A lot of my clients probably don't stay on the phone as much as I do and don't have headsets. Rather than hold a receiver up to their ear for an hour, a lot of them put me on speaker. It's mostly annoying when you're listening to someone foreign whose already hard enough to understand without the added effect of sounding like she's stuck in a well.

This makes me want to be their friend too. Since they have brought their conversation to me, I must assume they wanted me in the conversation and will henceforth act accordingly.

Is it proper decorum for me to buy the first round for my newfound friends?
