Each to their own. I like visiting NYC every once in a while, but I couldn't stand to live there. An afternoon walking from Battery Park to Central will expose more people to my eyes than live in some states, and my sightlines are dominated by towering structures. Something about that just gives me the creeps.

Luckily, there's a large range of options between small towns and Manhattan.

Meh, that's overrated. Yeah, if you're a local politician or big shot, people will gossip. If you're an average Joe, by and large nobody gives a shite.

1) people waving at you down the road
2) peace and quiet
3) Being able to leave your your stuff unlocked and nothing gets stolen
4) being able to pee outside at anytime
5) Slower Pace
6) lower crime
7) lower cost of living
8) close knit community

I lived there for a year and I agree. 22 year old fallguy had fun. 40 year old married with a kid fallguy thinks it sounds awful

Kinda true, kinda not.
If you upgrade to a “better” socioeconomic neighborhood then the same number of density is much better than living amidst poors, dummies, folks with drama, and people who don’t think the law or general regulations apply to them.

I know one can’t generalize but specifically in my case once I upgraded neighborhoods (roughly the same population density as before) my “home” life got easier.

See:

been to a bazillion large cities in asia and the middle east.

Nothing wrong with that. To each their own.

Well of course. I was just responding to the poster who is a resident of the city talking about convenience.

The biggest size place I would really want to live around is maybe 75,000, and that's pushing it. 10-20k is more like it, and even then I prefer being outside of town.

It’s pretty cool living in a place where everyone knows your name and you know theirs. Living in a big city is fun and exciting when you’re a young buck just trying to make more money and get laid,

This is more or less the stage i am in. Admittedly, Im trying to settle down more now.

Kids growing walking to their aunts or grabdpaws house, bonfires in the backyard with your friends you’ve known since kindergarten, high school football games, etc. it’s really not a bad life.

I think this is the real appeal for most people. I am not knocking it.

Sorry, just seems like NYC is always being used as the example of a "city" in these threads.

I will say that I would live in NYC in a heartbeat over LA. LA (and Houston to a similar extent) are just gigantic sprawls of humanity and buildings. Traffic alone is enough to give me a stroke.

In a small town, even if you don't know what you're doing, everyone else does.

That and your typical city "issues".

Same here. What attracts me to a city is the convenience of finding everything I need in a few blocks, preferably on foot. Take that away and I'd rather just live in a small town or the country.

Same.

I also love the convenience of having everything close to me. I never want to utter the words "I'm going into town, need anything?" in my life.

I like small towns for the lack of traffic.

I dont like small towns for the traffic the same girls get. One reaao. I had to move away, would be hard for me to marry a girl i know whos been with any of my friends. Last thing i need is having my friend over at a bbq and all hes thinking about is how he used to poll my ol lady

I don't have problems with the lower SES people.

1. Depending on how cities are structured, the upper classes usually don't shop where most lower classes do.

2. Even if they do, people tend to mind their own business. I don't see where the issues come in except for school districts.
