I agree. We bury dogs in the dirt, why not us? Hell, my 120 lb lab mix died about 8 months ago and I had to drag him to his burial spot in the woods. He didn't mind..because he was dead.

When we switched insurance providers a few years ago, our broker mentioned that the policy defaulted to ordering a coffin if the primary policy holder did not 'opt out' within a very short amount of time (24-48 hours I think?). They mentioned that this was fairly standard and said many families aren't thinking of this when they are dealing with death.
My family prefers cremation although I don't think it's possible to change the default on our policy now. If anyone knows more about this process, I'd be interested in hearing more.

Is there a way to rent a coffin for the service then just get tossed in a body bag or something for burial? If not someone should start a coffin rental company. All you'd need is a few coffins and a pressure washer.

Also to add to my post above, this cost apparently comes out of your life insurance policy which may be a reason why it's so expensive. Sort of a hidden cost since you are not directly paying for it. If I'm remembering correctly.

I think most states require a box of some sort for legal burial. You can rent a nice casket for the service and be buried in the basic box. Many times when you see a burial and they never take off the blanket/cover at the grave site, that's what the family has elected to do.

My ex who was in med school convinced me to donate my body to science because it's very rare for them to get to study someone with micropenis syndrome. I'm just glad the lil guy will finally get to satisfy someone

I've thought about it more and instead of being buried in the fancy Gulfstream, I think I want to just be thrown off of the top of a REALLY tall building; at least 100 floors. At the bottom, we'll lay out a 10x10 checkerboard pattern with tape and sell the squares for a grand a pop. Out of the proceeds, the first cut is going to be for the sanitation crew that's going to have to shovel me up. If I hit the grid, half of the remainder goes to the person who had the spot. If I miss the grid, half of the remainder will be refunded to all of the players. In any case, the rest will go to throw a massive Splat Party for everyone involved.

If someone wants to spend thousands on a coffin more power to them but you are just wasting money IMO. It is interesting how funeral / services have changed over the last 20 years or so. It used to be that everyone had the wake the night before then a service the next day followed by the funeral. Nowadays it seems that more and more people are choosing the one day service and funeral or even just a service / wake at night and that is it.

The death business pays a lot of money to State legislatures to pass some stupid laws to ensure they make money.
For example in Georgia it is a law that a body must be embalmed before it is cremated.
So even a simple cremation cost a few thousand.
Most of the time the body is embalmed and cremated in the same hour.

why do we even bury bodies anymore? Cremation is where it's at.
