Why did this become a thing? Water = glass, coffee or tea = ceramic

Ceramic cups hold heat better than glass ones.

Are you going to wear oven mitts when you grab a glass of piping hot beverage?

I think you guys are missing my point.

If ceramic retains temperatures so much better shouldn’t we use them for all our drinks?

Uh, because ceramic is an insulator. It keeps your coffee warm and the cup doesn't conduct the heat into your hands. You should stick to pumpkin spice lattes, it seems more your speed.

A while back, they invented this stuff called “ice” which allows your cold beverage to remain colder for a longer period of time

Using ceramics is cultural appropriation.

Heat transfer is driven by temperature difference. Hot drinks have a higher temperature difference compared to cold drinks in a room temperature environment. Also ceramic is heavier than glass.

Try drinking hot coffee out of a steel mug and let us know how it goes.

Because glass/crystal is considered more aesthetically pleasing.

In short, we put what we can in the prettier vessel, and drink what we have to in the less pretty vessel.
