Why Do Teachers’ Unions Want It to be Legal for Teachers to Have Sex with Their Students?

There’s currently a bill in Rhode Island that seeks to make it illegal for school employees to have sex with students. The state teachers’ unions and the ACLU have decided to oppose it.
quote:
Last year Alex Marszalkowski, a representative in the Rhode Island legislature, attempted to pass a bill that would have criminalized sexual relations between all adults with custodial and supervisory responsibilities and those in their care. According to Rep. Marszalkowski, the ACLU objected to this bill saying that the prohibition was too broad.
This year, Marszalkowski introduced a replacement bill designed to narrow the scope. And now the ACLU claims that the new bill is “arbitrary and capricious.” After the bill got to the subcommittee stage, the state teachers’ union went on record objecting to it, too. Their reason: that it unfairly singles out school employees.
quote:
But consistency is not the ACLU’s strong suit. The bill also forbids non-employee volunteers from having sex with students. And the ACLU didn’t like that aspect of it, either. The ACLU said it had “concern about targeting school volunteers, because a volunteer coach could be close in age to a student and run afoul of the law under this bill.”
Terri Miller, president of the Nevada-based advocacy group Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct and Exploitation calls this cycle “deliberate and calculated child endangerment.”

Where were these teacher's unions when I was in school

They should let the students decide this.

I get their objections, but it's a bad look.

I can see both sides on this. It seems kind of crazy for a teacher to go to jail and have to register as a sex offender because of a consensual relationship if both are consenting adults (you'd probably see this more in college than high school because of the ages involved).
However, you also dont want to cause a conflict of interest with favorable/unfavorable treatment of the student after said fricking/relationship.

It’s amazingly easy to simply have a law that outlaws teacher-student fricking (between consenting adults) but doesn’t try to make the teacher a sexual predator. Even Louisiana has done this. It’s a misdemeanor if the student is 17+.

Your obsession with teachers banging kids is kind of weird.

As long as they are of age there is zero reason this should be illegal

I say dump the law and let the school districts decide on a case by case basis if they want to terminate the teacher fricker or not.

So the teachers don’t constantly get fired

As long as the student has reached the age of consent it doesn’t really make sense to waste resources and money prosecuting these cases.
So a kid got hot for teacher. He’ll survive

By the looks of most of the teachers in these cases, I'd say he'll do better than just survive

Because crap loads of teachers bang students and it’s all part of the new world order

teachers should be able to have sex with students if the students are legal. i believe this bill makes that illegal
LA has a similar law and it's similarly stupid

Because criminalizing relationships between two adults is idiotic.
Is it unethical and inappropriate? Sure. Should there probably be consequences to say, a person's teaching credential, in these cases? Sure.
But illegal? Dumber than dumb

This is a cost-savings measure to cut down on the expensive legal bills that result from defending allegations of dirty dirty sexy misconduct

Unions basically twist everything into an excuse for the employer to fire their members. By default, they oppose anything that can be used for discipline or termination....reasonable or not.

Like alot if places it isn't the fact the 24 yr old teacher had sex with the 18 yr old which is probably over the age of consent but it is that the teacher is an employee at the school and "authority" figure or whatever they call it. Why does the law need to specify teacher? Why do they need another law?

I think were missing the bigger picture. This is going to cause unfair treatment to students further down the line.
Ask yourself this: Do you really believe a teacher is going to be IMPARTIAL when deciding disciplinary actions if they are having an affair. How about classroom grades. And do you believe that this hurts the learning environment in general.
I think what upsets me the most about this board is the clear double standards. If this was about drugs, I know tone would be completely different.
