It's hard to prove they were even there if you do a good job at cleaning up.

Apparently I'm dead in this scenario so I guess I do nothing.

Oh...and, at least in Texas, the squatters must have been there for 10 years to have gained adverse possession. If not, you can have them evicted, arrested.

there's a story a few years back about how King Ranch obtained somebody's land by basically "squatting" on an adjacent land by upkeeping it and moving the property boundary onto the poor baw's land.

Poor guy went out and shot something and it turned out to be on "their" land. LINK

I call bs on ending up on wrong side of law because you cut off utilities.

Close. Leave them inside, drop a couple of baseball bats near their empty hands then when the cops show up say "I felt my life was being threatened".

It’s a principle issue at that point. I would gladly take whatever assault charge or any other charges came my way.

In reality though, surely someone in history has used force to remove a squatter.. what’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to them? Probably not anything that bad.

That would require the police to actually protect and serve the public.

Trick the squatters into selling loose cigarettes....problem solved.

Imagine you went on vacation, and when you returned, some homeless people broke into your house and changed the locks and decided to live there. Legally, they can and you’re not allowed to throw them out and the police can’t do anything either. You have to go through the eviction process to legally remove them from your property.

I dare someone to try this. I would not be calling police.

It would never reach the cops and I would risk whatever legal issue was necessary.

Can a property owner wait for the squatters to leave the house in the morning and then go in and throw their stuff away and change the locks? *No! According to the sheriff’s office, the property owner could face charges for doing what they refer to as an “illegal eviction”.

I would be in jail then.

Burn it to the ground and say the squatters did it. you don't want it after they are done with it.

I agree, it's complete insanity. A neighbor of mine had tweekers squat on her property. Took her several months to get them out.

I’m pretty sure that would be burglary in Louisiana. And I’m pretty sure they would not have any squatter’s rights if they’d been there less than a year.

This seems like a tiny bit of a problem. If you leave, someone can just come in for a week and claim they live there. That doesn't seem like the best piece of legislation

Unfortunately, by the time this case became known to authorities, the squatters had been living in the home for more than a week and had moved their furniture inside.

I think you're not legally allowed in your home, or to live there in that time.

And make it so unpleasant for the squatters that they leave pronto?
These are usually homeless people. How much more unpleasant can you really make it to be worse than living on the streets?

Also, what’s the process if the squatters leave the apartment even for a short time? Like if I go back into my apartment and let’s say they’re gone for an hour to do whatever, can I just lock the door behind them and not let them back in?

Although you might feel tempted to break into your home and physically force the squatters out, shut off all utilities, change the locks, or take some other action, be careful. Because of squatters’ rights, you could end up on the wrong side of the law. Although frustrating, if the squatters refuse to move out of your house, your only recourse is to take the legal route.

I would take matters into my owns hands. It’s quite simple. I would get them the frick out of my house using force.

That's probably what they want you to do.

Then they call the cops, you get arrested and probably a restraining order. Now they have your home and don't even have to worry about you coming around any more.
