re: Why do sober people feel the need to broadcast it so much?

People think I'm sober when I'm not. I just don't care much for it most of the time. There's an old family member I've had to correct 100 times. "He doesn't drink." "Actually I just don't like red wine and that's all you ever offer"

My experience is while some are loud many are quiet about it
The loud ones may need self reassurance while some also hope to pass on support to others struggling by normalizing recovery.
Neither of those bother me, even if not my scene.

I cannot drink.
Drunk people constantly try to get people who are not drinking to drink.
Why do you always have to offer me a second drink, I get the first one, but why do I have to get so detailed in that I medically can't drink alcohol in order for you to stop pushing alcohol on me?
IDGAF if you drink, but why do you feel the need to broadcast it so much?

Y'all talk about drinking all the time on this board and no one has a problem with it
Because some people can handle it and it doesn’t ruin their lives?
I’m talking about social media, not here.

Look I'm too high right now to argue with you

Not everyone who is sober is loud about it.
It may seem that way, however, since you'll hear the ones who are loud and not the ones who are quiet about it.

In Louisiana, especially, people are given massive amounts of shite for not drinking alcohol in social settings.

As a general rule, I never broadcast my sobriety to people voluntarily. If offered a drink or something, I will say I don't drink, but otherwise, it's never a topic of discussion.

Just made 9 years here, and if you’re anything like me, 10 days is a big fricking deal. Congrats

Whether you’ve always been sober or a person that formerly did drugs/drank alcohol and now have quit. I see it mostly in the latter group. I thought their whole thing was “just let me do my thing and don’t try to pressure me into it. It’s not a big deal that I’m sober.” But yet they have to let everyone know about it.
Sounds like you have a little guilt behind those eyes. Maybe taking a little bit too much of grandpas ole cough medicine?
You should get yourself to a meeting baw.

I quit drinking in 1993. Just throwing that out there.

It shouldn’t bother you. And if it makes you feel better a lot of the people that base their identities on getting sober don’t stay that way.
They either stop making it the crux of their being or get loaded again.

I generally just say no thanks or have a tonic and lime…
Always find it interesting how some people get it and just move on while others act like your in seventh grade again and learning about alcohol and youthful intimidation.
I especially like how bartenders treat you after you have a tonic and lime. ( especially the second one) … At a place like a wedding etc..they get it and usually pretty friendly and aware of your preferences and treat you good …

Trust me, we would rather not broadcast it, but the strange looks you get when you’re not drinking and everyone else is… necessitates it. “I don’t drink.”
And then you get the “knowing” glance and then you have to add “I never have,” because they automatically assume you had a drinking problem.
Some people just never drank at all. Everybody chill. I can still enjoy your company.

Damn near everytime. They remember you, keep the soad and lime coming, and often even offer to decline the tip. There is a respect there. I tip anyway due to that respect.

i dont. i find most dont.
the only time i would is if someone is persistent on making me drink. its only happened once. After the first two "no thank you" get a clue and frick off.
