If this wasn’t true, it wouldn’t be so GD funny.

It’s a real thing, but a total mystery to me and the wife?

In February, our daughter turned 16 and we were at the course retuning her parallel parking for the 50th time and at the exam office at 8. In the snow, no less.

She’s been living in that dam SUV,

She’s not allowed to drive out of town, or in bad weather, but not having to chauffeur around for 5 a.m. swim practices is heaven.

FaceTime and online video gaming. They don’t need to travel to interact. It is mind boggling to me that a 16 year old would not want to drive around aimlessly on a Friday night for three or four hours to enjoy being a teen.

Some kids aren’t ready to drive at 16. I have 4 kids. Daughter No. 2 totaled two cars within four months of getting her license, a Honda CRV I bought her and then her sister’s Honda Accord that was a hand-me-down from me. She rolled the Accord and is lucky to be alive. She admitted she was not ready - duh - and was actually scared to drive again and spent her junior year hitching rides. Her mom and I weren’t going to let her drive anyway.

My last girlfriend had a girl that was 19 and had never attempted to learn to drive. I think there were a few factors there;

No father figure
Skittish, anxiety issues
A child that may never leave the mothers nest
A child with seemingly no ambition to do anything
A child that's witnessed her mother treated poorly by men, albeit by her own choices in picking, or the way she treats men firstly or both
A child that appears to have no desire in the opposite sex and likely a lesbian or future trans person in the closet.
A child that covid ramifications took a toll on at a tender age

It's a GenZ/Alpha thing. Kids aren't motivated by the same things that older generations were. The American way is totally lost on them. They have basically been indoctrinated that the old way of life a big sham, or that it's destructive or threatening. Kids today are actually fricked up beyond all repair.

Getting a drivers license is usually a prerequisite to getting a job...

Who needs that shite?

We pretty much made the fiancé’s 16 year old go get her permit. Told her that we weren’t going to be chauffeuring her around once she turns 18. It also helps that her Mom lives out in BFE so she can’t Uber/Lyft anywhere there and her step-sister wants her license as well.

I think I’ve talked half of my teen clients into getting licenses. They bitch about being at home with their parents all of the time and I drop the “Well, you know what would help with that”.

There’s a whole lot of enabling out there, limiting kid’s independence.

I am almost 50 and have grown to hate driving. The longest road trip for vacation for the family is 2 hours. Otherwise, we will fly or take a train somewhere. Same rule goes for business travel.

That being said, I felt like a king when I got my license at 15 so not sure why teenagers are acting like 50 year olds

If kids aren't driving because of this, then it's a parental problem. I damn sure wasn't paying for my kids to get a ride every where and I was not driving them, if they are capable. I did however pay for the cost associated with getting a license and provide a vehicle. Haven't had any push back from my kids on this.

Our daughter is chomping at the bit to get her drivers license but most of her friends seem to be of the opinion that its not high on their list of priorities. They don't do anything but stare at their phones when they are awake so they don't need transportation. Our daughter is an outlier...she wants a Jeep so she can swap ducks.....whats the world coming too.....

I started driving before my license... shouldn't have, but I did and I loved it.

I turned 16 in 1981. I had been driving daily for 3 years. It was a different era. If a kid did that today everybody in the family would be tossed in jail. I was 17 when I finally got a license....never had a learners permit. Did not need a license. drove 15-20,000 miles a year without one. Obviously did not have insurance either. Again, it was a different era....

What’s wrong with the boy?

I’ll be damned if mom was dropping me off at tucks uptown when I was 18.

Seriously though he might need to go talk to someone

I don't really know any teens but the cost of used cars, insurance, and repairs might have something to do with it.

I agree with the bolded first half, disagree with the rest.

I think it's just a change in priority. I have a lot of friends who are really into cars, work on trucks, etc. I have no interest. I only have a car because it's a necessity where I live. The nearest grocery store is 5 miles away, and honestly if the route there was less dangerous highway, I'd opt for my bike and and pull behind trailer.

I got my license at 17, because my stepdad passed away and my mom gifted me his truck. That truck shite the bed and I didn't have funds to get a new one, but I did have a bike. I rode that for years and that was that. Hertz offered car rentals under 25, so if I wanted to get out of town I'd just do that. There was no reason for me to have a car. I simply was not interested. Honestly, if it didn't scare the hell out of my wife, I'd probably still just ride a bicycle.

Cars are a pain in the arse. They malfunction, they require upkeep and maintenance, if you don't know what you're doing you get ripped off by assholes, insurance is sky high, you have to go get gas. frick all that.
