re: Why do so many teenagers not care about getting their drivers license anymore?

I don't understand it either. Both of my kids got their licenses when they turned 16, but have friends who just have no interest at all. We know one kid who is in college who still refuses to get one. He has no issues, but he just doesn't want to bother. His parents have to pick him up and drive him to college whenever he wants to come home for the weekend.

To be completely honest, we were regularly out drinking at 16 and 17 years of age. Now, kids have to be damn near out of college before drinking is legal. So it is not all a bad thing, just very different than when we were kids.

There was at least a full generation of kids that lived with the 21 drinking age before this sudden no interest in driving trend

Pussies the lot of them.

Where are the teenagers going to drive to?
Malls are mostly closed
Movies are horrible these days
No more arcades
Schools have sucked all the spirit out of the kids so they are not going to games
Most parks close early or actively deter teens from going there because they worried about fighting
So they can spend a ton of money (in teenager terms) to go out to eat or watch a crappy movie.

If you have a teenage son not interested in getting his driver’s license them he isn’t that interested in pussy either.

No idea, oldest is 18 and we are forcing him to get a license.
My son is 28 now. When he turned 16, he also had no interest. He was 17.5 before he got his license. Most of his friends were the same.
Its a odd thing but I did not pressure him.

I’ve heard lately about this. Insurance rates maybe

This one stumps me. I almost shite my pants when I got my drivers license. Closest I'd felt to a little kid on Christmas morning since I was a little kid.
That’s because we saw that DL as a form of independence and freedom .To be able to go where we want, do what we want. We relished the idea of being out from under our parents control, even if only a little.
The concept of independence and freedom are not only foreign to most young people today, they’re downright terrifying.
Disclaimer: my daughter will turn 17 in June and has had her DL since her 16th birthday. In her friend group, she and one other girl drive. The others, all already 17 do not, and have expressed quite openly and unabashedly their disinterest in getting one. One even has a new BMW that was given to her on her 16th birthday March of last year and hasn’t driven it once.

My kids were driving at 13-14. First in the hood/parking lots, then on busier roads. There were driving to school at 15, before they got their license.

How does he get around currently?
He has us but he doesn't like leaving the house very often.

1. They’re broke. What’s the point of a car if they can’t afford gas, can’t afford insurance, and can’t find a job that would pay for those things?
quote:A reason.
2. They’re incompetent at dating. Why have a car when they have no reason to leave the house?
quote:Everyone drinks and drives in New Orleans anyway. This likely doesn't impact much.
3. Rideshares are more convenient/cost-effective for infrequent use in cities.
A ton of it is these kids all play video games and talk with their friends online. They don't see as much of a need for in person human interaction when they can just hang out with their friends virtually.

Kids don't have concept of this, really... in South Carolina, your insurance isn't changed until the kid is licensed, permits don't have an affect on the cost. Even still, I doubt "costs" are an issue in mind for teens.
Yeah.. Anecdotal, obviously.. but every person I know with a kid refusing to drive has the expense covered and the car ready to go for whenever they're ready. They just don't care.
Bizarre to me, as someone who threw a fit because my parents went on a cruise the week I turned 16 and I had to wait an extra week to take my driving test.

Porn, video games, and uber eats.

Because it’s less suspicious if their teacher drives them.

They don't want to have to drive your drunk arse home from Hooters.
Posted on 4/28/25 at 7:35 pm to Violent Hip Swivel
It is perplexing.
Turning 16 and driving away from the house on my own was an out of body experience.

Been on a highway lately? Either NASCAR or Formula One or a Firing Range

They don't need a car to interact with friends
