Why do people like to pretend that they’re too busy

Instead of just saying nope I missed that or didn’t see something they like to say I’m just so busy I haven’t had time to do anything. I got a lot going on.
It comes off as super phony.
It comes off as super phony.

In case you haven't noticed, society current theme is an absence of responsibility. Fact you're surprised is surprising.

Because people overthink and think that it looks worse when you say you forgot.

That's the correct interpretation.
The other interpretation is they don't want to be around you.

Because it’s nicer than saying “I just don’t like you”
ETA: sorry for the off base reply. I was too busy to read the entire post.

Because it relieves them of personal responsibility and instead blames factors beyond their control.

Work from home society. Too busy or tied up means:
“I’m at the dog park”
“Had to run up to Home Depot”
“Had to run a couple quick errands”
“got stuck out in the yard and forgot my phone”
Somehow over the last 4 years these have become acceptable excuses when before they were 3 strikes and you’re out.

This is a big office culture thing
For example, people will be talking about sports and someone will say "oh, I don't have time to watch xyz team anymore. just too busy." however, they have an encyclopedia level knowledge of what's currently streaming on netflix/max/hulu. or the opposite of that.
It's OK to say you're just not that interested in something!

When it's my boss I'm talking to I say I overlooked it and take ownership of the mistake. When it's somebody down the chain I have a bunch of excuses. Never gave it any thought before reading this thread. Just realized it, not sure why I do that.

Simply tell the person, "I'd rather spend my time on Facebook!" Just be honest.

What are you complaining about? I'm too busy to read your post.

Why do you assume to know if someone is too busy are not? Some of us are.
Maybe you need to find something to do with your life other than to worry about how busy someone else is?
Like post on a message board about it?

I love the super busy response when asking parents to help with their own kids’ activities.
And then you see them sitting in their fricking car for 2 hours instead of helping.
Or parents that claim work keeps them too busy to volunteer, when the person leading the group travels 3 days per week, coaches a tee ball team, is president of PTA, etc…. And the too busy parent is constantly posting about their daily tennis league.

That’s what I’m getting at. Whether it’s just not being interested or simply forgot.
Just be direct. Don’t bullshite me. I don’t do the phoniness.

I just say that it’s on my to do list and I’ll get it taken care off. If I do miss it, then it’s “oh crap I missed it”. Then I’ll get it done
