Why do our pets get rabies vaccinations but our children don't?

Seriously.

My dogs get one shot every 3 years. They're then bulletproof and can do whatever they want out in the woods.

If my kid gets bit by an infected animal;

A. I have to pray they tell me they got bit.
B. If they do tell you, they then have to go through that 30 shot hell as a precaution.

We have bats who dive bomb our pool every night at dusk (subtle we swim at dusk brag) and while it's cool I am terrified one is going to bite my kid.

Why can't we just vaccinate ourselves? Vaccine only work on animals?

Do you really want to increase the chances of giving your kid autism? It’s like you don’t even read the news.

I don't think this is correct. Even with the vaccine, your pet will still likely catch rabies if comes into contact through fluid transmission.

I just went through this with my vet when I found a bat in my pet's mouth.

Not a common disease in humans and the vaccine IIRC has to be given in a weekly interval for 4-6 weeks and boosters at 6 months to 1 year to remain effective.

You realize bats have really tiny teeth and can bite you while you are asleep and you not feel it or see it?

My pastor at church found a bat that had flown inside his house and was in his bedroom. His doctor suggested he get the rabies vaccinations as a precaution. It is multiple shots you have to get and painful from what I’ve been told.

Isn't it like a 21 shot series directly into the abdomen?

Myth: Rabies kills 3 Americans every year
FACT: Rabies kills 4 Americans each year.

Yeah if you wake up and find a bat they just assume you were bitten in your sleep.

Those bats are dive bombing bugs, not your kids.

I think that was the old series.

My pastor just happened to tell a story to his congregation about finding the bat in his bedroom.

A doctor in the crowd that heard the story emailed our pastor telling him he needed the shots right away. Told him to call his pcp immediately about it. He had to go to the ER to get the shots.

moot point bc it doesn't have to bite you to transmit the virus.

Bat buzzed around me for about 50 yards while jogging this morning. Creeped me out a bit.

Growing up my cousin and I would get a few pocketfuls of small rocks and climb up in the deer stands around dusk with a shotgun. Then one of us would toss out small rocks at the ground and the other would try to hit the bats when they dove at them. Sort of a redneck skeet shoot.

Rabies makes you horny, though. But, by that point, it's fatal.

There have only been 15 cases of human rabies in the US in the last 10 years
