We understand that on a 50 mile trip the difference in arrival time between driving 70 and 85 is about 6 1/2 minutes.

While slow, and dangerous behind the wheel, old people can serve a purpose.

They are older, can't see as well, react as fast. Why is this so hard to understand?

I drive from the Nola area up towards BR most days. The plant baws driving like assholes on my ride back home are far more dangerous I will admit.

But where I live, the old people are annoying as fck. Speed limit might be 35 and they will go 20 to 25. The grocery stores and shops(and especially the former old people pharmacy) have parking lots that are up against Veterans. The dumbasses will put their blinker on 100 yards before the turn and then start slowing down to like 15 miles an hour. As they get ready to turn if they don't see a parking spot right away, they hit the brakes. This of course causes people behind them to hit brakes and then rear end accidents happen.

And even in the neighborhood, they run through intersections with stop signs and stop at intersections with no stop signs. The speed they like here is 12 mph.

So if you are too scared to drive and don't trust yourself anymore, just stop driving.

Most people have an instinctive reaction to drive more slowly when they are less sure of their driving. This doesn't really help at all, but that's the instinct nonetheless.

My late Father in Law in his last years drove with his left foot resting heavily on the brake. Three brake rebuilds happened before that new car reached 10,000 miles. And one day we followed him and his brake light never went off.

He was driving fast and slow.

I dont drive slow as attested by the many police jurisdictions in the area and I dont necessarily condsider myself old either at 59 yrs old.

But I have noticed two things in my last 10 yrs. There is not much that gets me in any hurry anymore especially driving to/from work. Also I can see a gradual decline in my cognitive motor skills when I get in a fast moving group of cars/heavy traffic so I just usually ease out of the way.

Driving down the interstate I drive as fast as anyone but in town in traffic I am not in any hurry any more.

I'm in my 60's and set my speed control on the speed limit. I get passed much more than I pass anyone. Why don't more people respect the SPEED LIMIT?

Less than a hour after I posted in this thread I headed to Nola and got on the interstate at the end of Veterans. It's a long so called on ramp. Some stupid old person was going 35 the whole time all the way onto the interstate.

Because it is stupidly low for the capabilities of today’s cars.

And it’s fun to beat the original ETA on your trip apps.

This. And people are really bad at math. If you have to go 10 miles and you do it at 70 mph the entire time, you'll get there in 8.57 minutes. However, if you go 15 miles over the speed limit at 85 mph, endanger everybody the entire way, risk getting a ticket, increase wear and tear on your vehicle, shorten the life of your vehicle and its components, constantly have to break cruise control and modulate your throttle, piss off all the drivers around you and elevate your blood pressure, you'll get there in 7.06 minutes. A whole 1' 31" faster.

Whoop-dee-fricking-doo speed racer.

I drive slow, in the left lane, because it makes me feel in control. I know the line of cars behind me know, and I know they know, that I am in control of their speed. It's a glorious feeling I get most times I drive.
