I don’t like driving the speed limit unless I’m in the left lane

plus slower recognition and reaction times, so its a good safety practice to factor in

Nailed it.

You also tend to stop giving a shite about being in time for a lot of things.

It's been one of my longtime goals to become that old guy that drives 8mph under the speed limit down the highway at 7AM each weekday morning. And yep I'll smile at each and everyone of you bastards as you whip by and flip me the bird. I love that guy!

Is that why they stop in the middle of the aisle at the grocery store and talk? Or want to chat with the cashier about their medications and what was in the newspaper that morning while people are waiting in line?

Because they can barely reach the accelerator.

Slow traffic in the left lane is usually not because a slow driver is just hanging out in the left lane. More frequently it's because there are too many ridiculously slow drivers in the right lane, and the less-slow drivers have to use the left lane to pass them.
Get the minimum interstate speed up to at least 60 MPH.

Part of it. I watched this happen with my own parents. Once retired, they lost perspective on what it’s like to always be (or feel like) you’re in a rush. Because they weren’t! They had the rest of their lives to do everything. The rest of us who are still working don’t have that luxury. Old people have no sense of urgency unless it’s something health related.

But it’s also because they physically move slower. Hell, I’m 49 and I move slower. Getting older is a bitch.

I hope that you are not saying that 49 is old.

When I was a kid, the old people were cool. Rough tough and didn’t take crap off of anybody. If they saw something wrong, they did something about it. Greatest Generation. I just assumed that generation of old people drove slow because they grew up before cars.

Now THIS generation of old people, I just say frick em all! They are the douchiest bunch of self-centered assholes I’ve ever met. They still have these grandiose ideas akin to their Hippie nature. These useless arse people are here to just get in the way. I really can’t stand them, and their damn 20 mph driving. I would say more but I’m running late for my OPPS (old people problem sensitivity training) meeting. Lol

As for driving in the left land, I have no clue.

I do. It is not the oldsters. It is early 20's mixed races, male and female, often texting.

Many times it is those damned Prius assholes too. and the upper dress package F-250 dickheads get in the hammer lane, drive their 40 miles, then get out. It never occurs to them to read those signs that say "Slower traffic keep right."

To answer the OP's question, I think they're driving scared. Fear causes them to drive slower.

I'm middle aged. I only drive slow where I know the state police like to hide. I don't hog the left lane either. I pass and get back over. I see plenty of folks a lot younger than me hog the left lane.

I can say this, though, it's not the old people that are driving around texting or causing you to miss that green light because they're on FB or taking selfies.

Where I live, slow drivers are, typically, illegal, and not wanting to get pulled over, and deported.

Think about what driving was like when they were young in the 40’s. What are we talking, horses and buggies? I don’t even know.
